WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?
DEMOCRACY REFERS TO A POLITICAL SYSTEM IN WHICH
GOVERNMENT IS FORM BY THE PEOPLE, EXERCISED EITHER
DIRECTLY OR THROUGH ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE.

DIRECT DEMOCRACY
 All or most of the citizens participate directly in either
holding office or making policy (laws)
 Exists only in very small population sizes
 Allows the people to directly make laws and govern
themselves. (people make all the decisions)
 Impractical in large populations or countries
 Very time consuming: most citizens do not have the time,
information, interest, or expertise to make reasonable
choices or political decisions
INDIRECT DEMOCRACY
 Also referred to as a “Republican form of
government” in the Constitution (a Republic)
 The people elect officials to make laws, policies, and
political decisions for them
 Works well in large populations when its impractical
to bring the entire population together
 Not time consuming and creates professional
politicians

Meaning Of Democratic Values
 Core democratic values are the fundamental beliefs
and Constitutional principles of Indian society, which
unite all Indians. These values are expressed in the
Declaration of Independence, the Indian Constitution
and other significant documents, speeches and
writings of the nation.
 Democratic values support the belief that an orderly
society can exist in which freedom is preserved.
EQUALITY
EQUALITY
 Equality means that all men are equal and should be
entitled equal , opportunity and treatment.
 Equality means all things that are equal when
measured by society's standards.
 Everyone or everything is on the same level in ability,
rank, quality, quantity or social standing.
 Fairness is an essential feature of equality.
 The objective is for all people to receive fair
treatment regardless of their background or social
status.
 Government services are one measure of how
equality works in everyday life.
 For example, when applying for a driver's license,
everyone is given the same written and vehicle
operation test.

PEOPLE FEEL SUFFERING & HUMILAITION OF

The term ' justice' is derived from the Latin word "
justicia" which means joining or fitting , or of bound
or tie.
 The concept of justice has been analyzed and defined
differently by philosophers, political thinkers ,
economists , sociologists and religious leaders. It has
been changing from time to time, depending upon
the conditions and circumstances prevailing in each
age.
 It has to coordinate and draw a harmonious balance
between rights and duties of the people living in the
society.
 It is connected with the moral, social, economic,
political, and legal relations of an individual with
others.

independent thinking by the citizens of India
 Education is universal human right.
 Democratic education sees young people not as
passive recipients of knowledge but as active co-
creaters of their own learning.

Educational Implications
 There is an inseparable connection between democracy
and education. Democracy cannot be thought of in
segregation from the spectrum of education. It has been
admitted on all hands that the sinew of democracy
depends upon the character and intelligence of all its
citizens.
 John Dewey, the votary of democratic education
spells out succinctly, “The devotion of democracy
to education is a familiar fact. A government
resting upon popular suffrage cannot be
successful unless those who govern and obey their
governors are educated”.
