Microlog
The Microlog* (Fig. 24) is a pad type resistivity device that primarily detects mudcake (Hil
chie, 1978). The pad is in contact with the borehole and consists of three electrodes spac
ed one inch apart. From the pad, two resistivity measurements are made; one is called th
e micro normal and the other is the micro inverse (Fig. 24). The micro normal device inve
stigates three to four inches into the formation (measuring Rxo) and the micro inverse inv
estigates approximately one to two inches and measures the resistivity of the mudcake (
Rmc). The detection of mudcake by the Microlog* indicates that invasion has occurred an
d the formation is permeable. Permeable zones show up on the Microlog* as positive sep
aration when the micro normal curves read higher resistivity than the micro inverse curve
s (Fig. 24). t Shale zones are indicated by no separation or "negative separation" (i.e. mic
ro normal < micro inverse).

The Microlaterolog (MLL)* (Fig. 21) and the Proximity Log (PL)* (Fig. 25), like the
Microspherically Focused Log (MSFL)*, are pad type focused electrode logs
designed to measure the resistivity in the flushed zone (Rxo). Because the
Microlaterolog* is strongly influenced by mudcake thicknesses greater than 1/4 inch
(Hilchie, 1978), the Microlaterolog* should be run only with saltwater-based drilling
muds. The Proximity Log*, which is more strongly focused than the Microlaterolog*,
is designed to investigate deeper so it can be used with freshwater-based drilling
muds where mudcake is thicker.

ydrocarbons in the pores are nonconductive. Therefore, the ability of roc
k to transmit an electrical current is almost entirely the result of the wate
r in the pore space. Thus resistivity measurements can be used to deter
mine porosity.
In hydrocarbon-bearing zones, the shallow resistivity (Rxo) is affected by the unflushed residual hydrocarbon
s left by the invading mud filtrate.
