SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals
replaced the
MDGs – Millennium Development Goals
 From here to 2030
• Adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015,
the SDGs are broader than the MDGs they
replace, which were largely directed to the
eradication of extreme poverty

• The SDGs ‘seek to realize the human rights of all

and to achieve gender equality and the
empowerment of all women and girls. They are
integrated and indivisible and balance the three
dimensions of sustainable development: the
economic, social and environmental’.

and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen
universal peace in larger freedom.’

Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of
water and sanitation for all
• Target 6.2: By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation
and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to
the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations
– Indicator 6.2.1: Proportion of population using safely managed sanitation
services, including a hand-washing facility with soap and water

Important for the living condition of many people in many countries, but is it a
key target for unions or an indicator of unions’ advocacy at work?

Goal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas
and marine resources for sustainable development

• Target 14.3: Minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification,

including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels

 Which indicators matter most to
unions?

For unions as representatives of working people,

the challenge is to identify which SDG indicators
will be their main focus and concern.

Some SDGs, targets and indicators will be important

and useful to unions, in collective bargaining with
employers and in tri-partite discussions with
government
