A job is a position an individual
holds doing specific duties.
For example, if you would look closely
at the job of a lawyer, you can say that
a lawyer’s job is working as an
associate in X Law Firm.
An occupation is defined as the
similar work for which people have
similar responsibilities and for which
they develop a common set of skills
and knowledge.
For example, people who are in the
mental health occupation would
include psychologists, clinical
psychologists, counselors, and
psychiatrists.
Career is the combination and
sequence of roles played by a
person during the course of a
lifetime (Super, 1980).
It is a continuing journey
that covers a lot of activities.
It allows a person to use
his/her knowledge, skills,
potentials, or abilities acquired
and developed through one’s
formal training at school.

than half of one’s lifetime.
It is a process through which
individuals distinct characteristics for
work are formed.

life.
Having a clear direction in life is
necessary for them to achieve their career
goals or plans.
They must know their personal
mission in life or the reason that they are
doing all the things they do everyday.
Their personal mission statements

It is important to study and
assess the personal factors that
might influence the teenagers in
choosing their future careers as
well as realize the importance of
knowing oneself in achieving one’s
career goals.

personality characteristics are analyzed and
matched with job factors or an occupational
profile.
• Psychological - This theory establishes a
classification system that matches personality
characteristics and personal preferences to job
characteristics. The Holland Codes are six
personality/career types that help describe a
wide range of occupations. Six Personality
Categories: Realistic, Investigative, Social,
Conventional, Enterprising, and Artistic

efficacy, which means that a person may exercise
control over his or her thoughts, beliefs, and actions,
and that self-efficacy is the predictor of behavior.
Bandura explained that self-efficacy is tied to
motivation, which is the most important driver of
one’s career development.
• Development or Life-Space Theory - Humans are in
constant change and go through life learning and
doing new things, while changing roles in the
process. Donald Super influenced the idea that
developing a sense of self and realize that you
change over time is important when planning your
career.
