Measuring Attitude
Discussant: Diana Rose M. Hamor
Formative Evaluation

 administered to determine the effectiveness of teaching

and to fin out how much the students achieved or
reached the goals or objectives of learning task.
 not too high nor too low
80 -85 percent is accepted
General Principles in Constructing Test for
Formative Evaluation
1. A unit of learning must be analyzed first in terms of content and behavior
2. All the elements in a unit stated in the table of specification must be included
3. Only items of each behavior level specified must be included
4. Item must be arranged in ascending order of difficulty, from easiest to most
difficult in order that lower items are necessarily passed by slow learners.
5. Item analysis is used to determine whether the difficulty of items stated in the
table of specification is supported by students achievement.
Use of Formative Evaluation for Students
1. Pacing. is important in learning for it aids the students in learning the task and
the behavior considering that the rate of learning is individualized.
2. Reinforcement. Results of formative evaluation determines the learners on
how much they have reached the goals of objective of the learning tasks.
Formative test results serve as back up to students especially if they always get
low score.
3. Diagnosis. The errors committed by the student in formative evaluation
diagnose the weakness of level of difficulties of the learners in attaining the
learner task.
Use Formative Evaluation to the Teachers

1. Handling errors. Items where majority of the students committed

errors must be handled carefully by the teacher. The learner tasks
with so many errors committed by students must be re- taught by
the teacher in the next. If the result. Then he is going to give
formative test after the learning tasks was re-taught . If the result of
the test is 80 -85 percent, it means there is improvement in
comprehension and teaching is effective in the second time.
Use Formative Evaluation to the Teachers
2. Quality Control. If the teacher keeps records of past
achievement of students on formative evaluation, he can make
use of these records as basis for remedial instruction and
improvement of instruction by using different techniques and
strategies , aids, and devices. He indicates if the results of the
present formative evaluation using different approaches, aids
and devices show improvement compared to the past results of
formative tests.
Use Formative Evaluation to the Teachers

3. Forecasting. The teacher can predict that the results of

formative evaluation have high relationship with the
summative evaluation.
Characteristics of Formative Evaluation
1. Formative Evaluation is a series of quizzes taken by the students
2. It is administered at end of the day’s instruction
3. It consist of 10 – 15 items
4. It provides feedback for improvement of instruction and it is also used
to monitor student’s progress in the portfolio.
5. It determine if the teacher delivers the lesson for the day effectively ,
efficiently and excellently based on the formative evaluation result.
Characteristics of Formative Evaluation
6. If formative evaluation result attains 75 percent mastery, it means that the
teacher taught the lesson effectively.
7. Formative evaluation determines the student to proceed to the next learning
task if he has 75 percent or above mastery of the present learning task.
8. If result of formative evaluation is 70 to 74 percent mastery , the teacher must
re-teach the lesson.
9.The teacher remediates the class, if result of formative evaluation is 50 to 69
percent.
Characteristics of Formative Evaluation

9. The teacher remediates the class, if results of formative evaluation is 50

to 69 percent.
10. In formative evaluation, the teacher can easily decide if he will proceed,
re- teach, or remediate the learning task.
Teacher’s Decision
 Section A , B and C – Proceed to next learning task clue to
having 100%, 90% and 80 % mastery, respectively
 Section D – The teacher re- teach the lesson due to having 70 %
mastery.
 Section E, F and G – The teacher remediate the class due to
having 64%, 56% , and 50% mastery, respectively.
