WHAT IS A PROJECT??
• Project consists of inter – related activities which are to be executed in a certain order before
the entire task is completed.
• The activities are inter – related in a logical sequence which is known as precedence
relationship.
• Project is represented in the form of a network for the purpose of analytical treatment to get
a solution for scheduling and controlling its activities.
2
PHASES OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT
• Planning
Divide project into distinct activities.
Estimate time requirement for each activity.
Establish precedence relationship among activities.
Construction of a network diagram.
• Scheduling
Determine start and end time of any activity.
• Controlling
Use network diagram and time chart for continuous monitoring and progress reporting.

Formula used:
1. Efj = max(Esi + Dij)
2. Lfi = min(Lsj - Dij)
3. Esi = Efj – Dij
4. Lsj = Lfi - Dij 8
TAKEAWAYS
• Minimisation of each activity completion time in order to optimise the overall project
completion time (i.e., minutes) calculated by CPM project management technique.
• Helps to compare the planned with the real status.
• Identifies all critical activities that need attention.
• Makes dependencies clear and transparent.
• The method visualizes projects in a clear graphical form.
• It defines the most important tasks.
