Introduction
• South Indian Bank Limited (SIB) is a major private sector bank that was
founded in the year 1929 ( January 29, 1929). SIB is head quartered in
Thrissur city, Kerala , India.
• The bank offers banking and financial services to the customers. The
banking products mainly include loans, savings , investments vehicles,
insurance etc.
• The bank has strength of more than 838 branches ,20 regional offices, 42
ext. counters and 4 service branches spread across India.
• The bank also set up over 1244 ATMs and 4 Cash Deposit Machines all
over India.
• South Indian Bank has total assets of INR 74,312.15 crore (2017) with
capital ratio 12.37% and employs around 7,677 employees .
• Mr. Salim Gangadharan is an active chairman of the South Indian Bank
Limited.
History of SIB

• South Indian Bank was registered as a Private Limited company under the
Companies Act of 1913 and commenced business on 29 Jan 1929.
• The SIB was founded by a group of 44 enterprising men of Thrissur ,
Kerala who contributed Rs. 500/- each to the initial paid-up capital of Rs.
22000/- .
• The main objective of the foundation of bank was to serve merchant
community of Thrissur and Malabar coast .
• The bank received very good support from the pubic and showed slow but
steady growth.
• SIB included in the second schedule of the Reserve Bank of India and
became a scheduled on August 07, 1946.
• SIB was the first schedule Bank in the private sector in the private sector in
Kerala to get the license under section 22 of the Banking Regulation Act
1949 from RBI on June 17,1957.
Financial inclusion
• Till date , the bank has covered more than 100 villages and 15 urban
centres under financial inclusion and opened more than 10 exclusive FLC
centres ,which spreads across the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu , Andhra
Pradesh and Chattisgarh.

• Recently South Indian Bank introduced “KIOSK Banking Model” as a


financial inclusion initiative in association with Akshaya e-centres in the
state of Kerala through the software service provider i.e Tata Consultancy
Services.

• KIOSK is for the people living in unbanked or underbanked areas can


avail basic banking facilities fro nearby common service centre without
visiting a regular bank branch.
