WHAT IS TEACH NJ/ACHIEVE NJ?

• The TEACH NJ/ ACHIEVE NJ “is the bipartisan tenure reform approved unanimously by the legislature and
signed into law on August 2, 2012 by Governor Chris Christie.” (Teacher Evaluation Guidebook, Paterson
NJ 2019)
• The purpose of the law is to “raise student achievement by improving instruction through the adoption of
evaluations that provide specific feedback to educators,” (Teacher Evaluation Guidebook, Paterson NJ 2019)
and help to align professional development that are informed by the results of the evaluation process and
teacher/supervisor input.” The goal of the act is to improve upon the teacher evaluation process, allowing
for the earning and maintaining of tenure. Tenure is now based upon:

• Multiple measures of student success

• Teacher practice
• New evaluation procedures
• Feedback is more individualized and more focused on students.

PDP- PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
WHAT IS A PDP AND HOW DOES IT PERTAIN TO ME?

• A PDP is an Individual Professional Development Plan that is written by the teacher in conjunction with
their supervisor. “Teachers and school leaders now utilize their educational practice and student learning
data to prioritize areas for improvement as they develop their plans.” (NJ Department of Education,
Updated 5.17)
• One goal on the PDP must be created through the use of observation results and data from the annual
performance evaluation.
• One must to be aligned to one of the following:
• A teacher’s role as a member of a PLC
• Any school or district improvement plans
• They can be modified throughout the year. But are due by October 31st or one month of teacher’s
start date. (NJ Department of Education, Updated 5.17)

SGOS : STUDENT GROWTH OBJECTIVES
WHAT ARE THEY?

 SGOs are measures of student learning included in the evaluations of all teachers, principals, and assistant/vice
principals in New Jersey. Well-designed SGOs provide the following benefits:
 • For Students: SGOs promote reflective and collaborative teaching practices, alignment among standards,
instruction, and assessment, and improvements in student learning.
 • For Teachers: SGOs provide a method by which teachers can improve their practice while clearly demonstrating
their effectiveness through student progress. • For Principals/APs/VPs
 Administrators share in the SGO results of their teachers and can use the SGO process to help ensure each
student receives the best possible education within their school environ (What are Student Growth Objectives?

(Teacher Evaluation Guidebook, Paterson Public Schools- 2019-2020)
TIME TO THINK

 What are the requirements for SGO’s ?

 How will the absence of my student achievement data impact my summative rating?
 What is the purpose of linking student data to the teacher?
 How does the evaluation system support teacher and student performance?
 What are two areas of student achievement data?
 A.
 B.
