The Blended Learning

Definitions :
• a term used to describe the way e-learning is being combined with
traditional classroom teaching methods and independent studies in
order to create a new, combined teaching methodology.
• It represents a fundamental change in the way teachers and students
approach the teaching and learning process.
• a method of learning that combines face-to-face and online
instruction.
Three primary concepts :
1. In-person classroom activities facilitated by a trained educator.
2. Online learning materials, often including pre-recorded lectures
given by that same instructor.
3. Structured independent study time guided by the material in the
lectures and skills developed during the classroom experience.
Characteristics :
1. Disruptive model – most of the classes are presented by using a DE platform, which
provides the course in video format, allowing students to follow the subject wherever
they are.
2. Sustained model – most common, and perhaps the best-known type, especially
because it’s widely used in higher education instructions.

a. The Station Rotation Model – the classroom is divided into workstations and each
one has a specific function, but as a whole, they achieve a common goal.
b. Lab Rotation Model – the study group is divided into two categories; (1) students who
will study the practical material first. (2) students who will study the theoretical part first.
c. Individual Rotation Model – a model in which an individual student works alone without
necessarily working at all study stations.
d. Flipped Classroom – the inverted classroom is widely used method in universities.
Students study the subject that will be covered before the face-to-face classes.
Advantages for teachers :
• Teaching is less expensive to deliver, more affordable and saves time.
• Blended learning offers flexibility in terms of availability-anytime, anywhere.
• Access to global resources and materials that meet the student’s level of
knowledge and interest.
• Self-facing for slow or quick learners reduces stress, increases satisfaction, and
information retention.
• E-learning allows more effective interactions between the learners and their
instructors through the use of emails, discussion boards and chat room.
• Students have the ability to track their progress and can also learn through a
variety of activities that apply to many different learning styles.
• E-learning could improve the quality of teaching and learning as its supports the
face-to-face teaching approaches.
Advantages for students :
• Increase students interest.
• Keep students focused for longer.
• Provides students autonomy.
• Instil a disposition of self-advocacy.
• Promote students ownership.
• Allow instant diagnostic information and student feedback.
• Enables students to learn at their own pace.
• Prepares students for the future.
