HETEROTROPIC NUTRITION
WHAT IS HETEROTROPIC ?
Also refered to as consumers,
heterotrophs are organisms that
obtain their energy (nutrition) from
organic compounds/materials. In
other words, they are organisms
that are unable to produce their
own food (unlike autotrophs) and
therefore have to consume/ingest
organic compounds as a source of
energy.

RESPIRATION
Respiration refers to a person’s breathing
and the movement of air into and out of
the lungs (OER #2). The respiratory system
provides oxygen to body tissues for cellular
respiration, removes the waste product
carbon dioxide, and helps maintain acid–
base balance (OER #2). Inspiration is the
process that causes air to enter the lungs,
and expiration is the process that causes air
to leave the lungs (OER #2). A respiratory
cycle (or one breath while you are
measuring respiratory rate) is one sequence
of inspiration and expiration (OER #2)

HEART
The heart is a muscular organ in most animals,
which pumps blood through the blood vessels
of the circulatory system. Blood provides the
body with oxygen and nutrients, as well as
assisting in the removal of metabolic wastes. In
humans, the heart is located between the lungs
in the middle compartment of the chest.

BRAIN
Brain, the mass of nerve tissue in the
anterior end of an organism. The
brain integrates sensory information
and directs motor responses; in higher
vertebrates it is also the centre
of learning. (See nervous system,

ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY
Creating an artificial implantable kidney
would be an epic advance in medicine
and could address a chronic shortage of
donor kidneys needed for transplant.
Researchers have been at this quest for
the past 15 years and keep coming upon
one extremely knotty problem: how to
keep the blood flowing smoothly
through the artificial device without
clotting. In such devices, as blood
platelets respond to mechanical forces,
they have a natural tendency to clot,
causing a device malfunction.
