INTRODUCTION

 An Ecosystem is a community of plants and animals

interacting with each other in a given area, and also with their
abiotic environments.

 The ecosystem relates to the way that all these different

organisms live and interact in close proximity to each other.

 Ecological services are the benefits arising out of from the

ecological functions of the ecosystems.
DEEPOR BEEL
 Deepor Beel, located about 10 km southwest of Guwahati
city, is considered as one of the large and important riverine
wetlands in the Brahmaputra valley of lower Assam, India.

 It is considered as one of the staging sites for migratory birds

in India and some of the large collection of aquatic birds in
Assam during winter.

 Deepor beel provides a means of livelihood for a number of

local families.

 Deepor beel is also considered as a part of Ramsar site in

India.

Deepor Beel
Affecting factors
 In Guwahati towards the NH 37, there consist brick kilns and the
city’s garbage dumping ground which is affecting the Beels
condition.

 Guwahati city does not have a sewage treatment plant and the
raw sewage is directly discharged into Bhramaputra and the
Deepor Beel.

 The Pollution control board issued a warning of outbreak of

epidemic, due to contamination of Deepor Beel. Yet the GMDA
continues to dump and burn garbage near the wetlands.

 Continued draining of effluents are likely to destroy any remaining

aquatic animals as well as the migratory birds .

PROBLEM AND THE SOCIETY

 Deepor Beel’s ecosystem is essential to the society’s well-being

and prosperity.

 The untreated waste and garbage that are dumped in the

Beel not only cause harm to the aquatic ecosystem but also
the livlihood of the society.

 Deepor beel also represent an exceptional source of outdoor

recreation opportunities in Assam.

 It also serve as a source of income for the people who are

engaged in different activities.
OUR SOLUTION
 Firstly, State Government have to select a site at Chandrapur
and shift the dumping ground for further contamination.

 The State Government should set up many Sewage treatment

plants(STP) on priority for treating the Guwahati city sewage.

 The authorities of the STP should carry out extensive water

quality and pollution monitoring studies on a regular basis.

 These steps will surely improve the tremendous contamination

of the Beel.
ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY

 Kills any bacteria and chemicals present in it. Thus, the

water can be disposed safely to the environment.

 The final water which is released by the sewage

treatment plant can also be consumed by the
ecosystem.

 A significant amount of biodegradable material is

removed from water in the treatment process. This can
be used as a source of methane gas to produce power
in plants.
OBJECTIVES OF PROPOSED
SOLUTION
 To improve quality of wastewater and making it fit for drinking
purpose.

 Elimination of pollutants, toxicants and many such harmful chemicals.

 Preservation of water quality of natural water resources.

 To make wastewater usable for other purposes like it can be used in

agricultural practices.

 Prevention of harmful diseases.

 Saving the aquatic inhabitants in the water body.

STEPS INVOLVED IN A SEWAGE
TREATMENT PLANT (STP)
• Bar screen Chamber

• Holding/Collecting tank

• Trance

• Aeration tank

• Clarifier Tank

• Sludge tank

• Chlorine tank

• Filter tank

PROPOSED ROADMAP
 Ensure wastewater discharge does not have an adverse
impact on communities and the environment.

 Reduce supplier operating costs and increase operational

efficiencies by defining a standard cadence for wastewater
and sludge testing and reporting requirements which applies to
all consumer brands that adopt this guideline.

 Define pass/fail reporting limits for the analytical testing of

hazardous chemicals in wastewater discharges and sludge’s
produced during wastewater treatment operations.
OUR CONCLUSION
 We identified the problem Deepor Beel is facing
currently.
 There are currently no steps taken by the community.
 We learned about how a Sewage Treatment Plant(STP)
can help Deepor Beel to stop its contamination.
 The main objective is to improve quality of wastewater
and making it fit for drinking, to prevent harmful diseases
and saving the aquatic inhabitants in the water body.
 The solution we proposed can held the both the water
ecosystem as well as it will benefit the welfare of the
society.
