Considerations Packet. Bhatti, Sharyar S.,-University of Education LMC Lahore-Innovative Methods of Teaching in Science. Innovative Methods Definition: Innovative teaching is a proactive approach to integrate new teaching strategies and methods into a classroom. Effective Innovative Teaching Process:
Teachers Activities Students
HOW TO ORGANIZE ORGANIZING and REMEMBERING INFORMATION in SCIENCE: 1. MNEMONICS-this tool helps students in remembering items by using the first letter of each word to make a new word or sentence. HOW TO ORGANIZE
2.)ODD-ONE-OUT- This strategy requires students to use
what they know about a topic to identify the item that does not belong when given a choice of items. This works well with items that can be classified, such as simple and complex machines, organisms, chemicals, etc, HOW TO ORGANIZE 3.) SCIENCE FACTS TRIANGLE-This strategy divides informtion on a topic into three parts.By relating each section to the one above it, students can expand their knowledge from a central idea. Information can be used as advanced orgnizer HOW TO ORGANIZE 4.)MIND MAP- Mind mapping is a visual tool that helps students remember and associate key words and concepts. TYPES OF INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHODS A)-Micro-Teaching Method- teaching of small unit of content to small group of students in small amount of time to train in-expereince students-teachers for acquiring teaching skill. To improve the skills of experience teachers. Advantage-it increases the confidence of learner teacher. Disadvantage-it fails of providing necessary training to teacher to teach in normal classroom. TYPES OF INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHOD B.)Programmed Instruction Teaching Method- It is a procedure for identifying the instructional process to increase learning and improve performance Advantage- this offers a method of teaching project and others in local communities. Disadvantage- there is no chance for students creativity and the responses are highly structured. TYPES OF INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHOD C.) Individualization Instruction Teaching Method-it is a method of instruction in which content, instructional technology(such as materials) and pace of learning are based upon the abilities and interests of each individual learner. Advantage- there are less time constraints so they can go at their own pace and not feel pressured by the progress of other students. Disadvantage- there is similar potential for exhaustion as they too can be in constant interaction in an unnatural way with the teacher. LEARNING METHODS Hands On Learning – it involves active participation of students to experience scientific concepts than to just have an audience view. Story Telling- students love to hear stories and therefore, storytelling is one of the best ways to get their attention in class.Teacher can explain the facts of biology or the laws of physics in the form of stories Role Play-this innovative method is becoming an integral part of science education as students can intellectually and physically involve through activities while learning a new concept. LEARNING METHODS Sports Based learning- this is an interesting approach to learn problem solving in physics or a stepwise method to study complex chemical reactions. Sports are mostly in teams which also promote the importance of team work that helps them to synchronize better in group projects. Visual Clues- using visual clues easily supplements auditory information and students can easily connect better with ideas. The multi-sensory experiences improve understanding and memorization. LEARNING METHODS Embodied Learning- in this approach , mind and body of the students work together to explore science.Todays technology such as visual system that track movement or wearable sensors to collect physical and biological data. Project-this can be an individual activity or group activity which helps students to showcase the application side of what they learnt through theory. Multimedia Approach- this method is a blend of text, audio, animation, video, still images or interactivity content forms to teach diverse difficult to understand concepts in science. LEARNING METHOD ICT Enabled Learning –this approach integrates telecommunications, computers and relevant enterprise software, storage, middleware and audio-visual systems required to handle the topic. Video Clips-this teaching technique makes use of instructional video clips available online or in libraries to show and teach a new concept. Peer-to Peer Learning-students take the role of teaching each other that promotes excitement learning science. LEARNING METHOD Flipped Classroom- in this innovative technique, students are asked to go through video instructions or tutorials in the initial stage(digital learning).Second stage will be in classrooms where they involve in challenging tasks and assignments based on the information gathered through video assets. SAMPLE VIDEO: END OF LESSON! Salamat. TYPES OF INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHOD D.)Computer Assisted Teaching Method- it is an approach to teaching and learning in which computer technology is used as an aid to the presentation, reinforcement and assesssment and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a substantial interactive element. Advantages-can present concepts or processes dynamically and using multiple forms of presentations. Disadvantages-the need for teacher or instructors directly move from traditional methods to new and relatively untried method.
