 WHAT IS
PHARMACY?
Pharmacists are health professionals. They are the experts on medicine
in the community. They have the skills and knowledge to help patients
understand and use their medicines in the most appropriate way. While
most pharmacists work in community and hospital pharmacies, many
also work in primary healthcare environments (with general
practitioners), government organizations, industry, medical writing, and
academia. Opportunities for pharmacists are constantly growing as the
healthcare sector changes to meet the needs of our communities.

PHARMACY
Coca-Cola was invented by a pharmacist named John Pemberton. He
carried the jug of the new product down the street to Jacob's Pharmacy
where it was sampled and pronounced "excellent" and placed on sale
for 5 cents a glass as a soda fountain drink.

Another pharmacist, Charles Alderton, invented Dr. Pepper. Pepsi

was also invented by a pharmacist, as was Vernor’s Ginger Ale by
Detroit pharmacist James Vernor.

Ever wonder where the name Listerine© came from? It’s named
after Joseph Lister who spread the word about using antiseptics in
hospitals.

It can take up to twenty years to develop a new drug.

Different species of animals are used for testing new medications

and products (mice, rats, rabbits and monkeys to name a few).
Animal testing has helped make possible life-saving drug
discoveries.

The “Bowl of Hygeia” symbol is the most widely recognized

international symbol of pharmacy.
