What is impression ?
-An idea or opinion of
what something or
someone is like.
What is impression formation?
 A process of integrating information
about a person to form a coherent
impression.
How do we form impression
about others?
Perceivers tend to use himself/ herself as a
standard or frame of reference when evaluating
others.

Perceived Characteristics
Priming Effects
 It is the tendency for recently
used or perceived words or
ideas to come to mind easily
and influence the
interpretation of new
information.
Target characteristics
 The tendency for negative information to
weigh more heavily on our impressions
than positive information
A network of assumptions about the
relationship among various type of people’s
traits and behaviours. Knowing that
someone has one trait leads us to infer that
he or she has other traits as well.
Implicit Personality Theory
Primacy effect
Is the tendency for information presented
early in a sequence have more impact on
impressions than information presented
later.
Averaging and Adding
Models in Impression Formation
-by Norman H. Anderson
-in his experiment, participants typically receive a
series of trait adjectives or behaviour descriptions
about an actor and are requested to make overall
trait or likability impressions of that person.
 Funny (+3) + kind (+4)+ smoker (-1) + lazy (-2)
 In averaging model, total impression would = 1
 In adding model, total impression would= 4
◦ Anderson’s model of impression formation was
criticized on the grounds that it lacked psychological
plausibility because it seems unlikely that people
would perform all the necessary weighting and
averaging calculation in their minds to arrive at an
impression.
First impression of other’s personalities are critical in
that they serve to guide our thoughts and behaviors, influencing
the course of further interactions and development of
relationships.
Forming impression about others occurs naturally and
most of the time, we don’t realize it. And while it could be a
harmless thing in the most cases, sometimes it could lead to
the formation and strengthening of stereotypes. Which is why it
is important to know what we may develop negative impression
based on nothing solid, and learn to avoid the same.
