What is Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)?

The process of implementing damage detection

strategy for engineering structures.
OR
SHM is a tool used to quantify any damage and
deterioration state that might occur over the service
life of an structure.

SYSTEM OF SHM
Acquisition of Data
Includes various types of sensors and collection of desired
data

Communication of Data
Transmission of data from site to storage/analysis location.

Intelligent Processing, Cleansing data of noise and

extraneous information

Storage of Processed Data ,Data should always be retrievable

Diagnostics
Conversion of new data into structural responses

CONCLUSIONS

Structural health monitoring, provides the civil engineering community

with a suite of options for monitoring, analysing, and understanding
the health of our infrastructure systems.

These systems will provide essential tools to improve the sustainability

of infrastructure systems in the face of rising costs, shrinking budgets,
and rapidly deteriorating existing systems.

Piezoelectric material (EMI) and Fiber Optic Sensor are emerging and
very effective technologies in SHM
