Background Knowledge

Afghanistan used to be a progressive country


before the Taliban gained power. When the Taliban
ruled afghanistan, they became a religious state,
or a theocracy and enforced laws that were
fundamentalist in nature. One of the laws was the
requirements for all their women to wear burqa in
public. The Taliban was the mastermind behind the
9/11 terrorist attack, which involved the crashing of
two airplanes in the twin towers of the world trade
center in New York.
Recently, the USA invaded Afghanistan
and removed the Taliban from power.
Today, Afghanistan has its own
government, but the Taliban still has a
Strong influence on the afghan society.

This story is all about the life of Miriam, a


muslim woman in afghanistan. It is the part of
the novel that shows how life was like in afghan
before the Taliban came to power.
•The Taliban came to power, and strict
laws are placed on women. The laws are
even more severe than Rasheed has been.
Women no longer may travel without men .
Miriam said, she did not want to be with
her husband because his husband had two
wives already. His Father wanted her to
take into Nuristan to get married that man
.But as soon as she learned ,she ran away
.
•And then when her Father found her, she
put in prison.
•Women are forbidden from working
outside other of their homes.
•Girls are not allowed to attend to School.
•Women are not allowed to leave the house
unless they are covered from head to toe.
•Women are denied medical care
•Miriam compared herself to modern
Afghanistan women .

In general, Women in afghanistan still have


no rights. It is just about all their freedom
taken away.
