Definition
Machinery
Operative / Functional
Implements the functional output such as the
blade on a chain saw
Prime Movers
Engine, motor or other appliance which provides mechanical energy
derived from steam, water, wind, electricity, the combustion of fuel or any
other source. (Definition under FMA 1967)
Prime movers are devices that turn energy into motion to power a
machine. Prime movers include:
water turbines
electric generators
electric motors
electric rotary converters
the head and tail race of water wheels
motors powered by burning fuel, such as coal, petrol or natural gas.
Operational/functional
Transmission Machinery
Every shaft, wheel, drum, pulley, system of fast and loose
pulleys, coupling, clutch, driving belt or other device by which
the motion of a prime mover or other source of mechanical
power is transmitted to or received by any machine or
appliance. (Definition under FMA 1967)
