Problems
(T.L.E. Presentation)
5 Computer Problems
• Slow Performance
• Computer Constantly Freezes
• Internet Browsing Is Slow or Unresponsive
• You’re Seeing a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)
• Screen Display Is Truncated or Has Low Resolution
Slow Performance
• PROBLEM
• You may start to notice slower performance in applications you use every day. That’s likely a
problem stemming from your operating system. Typically, this is a result of fragmentation
on your C drive (C:). It’s not a big problem – easily resolved by doing some basic software
cleanup. Run a quick system check from your Task Manager to see which applications are
taking up the most CPU and RAM resources.
• SOLUTION
• Remove any unnecessary programs or processes running in the background that you don’t
use. In the unlikely event that there are more complicated hardware issues to contend with,
operating systems now come pre-programmed with a suite of free diagnostic and
troubleshooting tests you can run to narrow down the problems.
Computer Constantly Freezes
• PROBLEM
• Computers are complex machines that manage multiple processes without you even seeing them.
This complexity can sometimes cause your computer to freeze or not respond to your actions.
Nine out of 10 times you can remedy this simply by rebooting your system. In the event that you
are experiencing constant freezes, it could be a sign of insufficient system memory, registry
errors, corrupted files, or even spyware. You should check each of these potential issues one by
one until the problem is rectified.
• SOLUTION
• Running system checks in the background will tell you if you don’t have sufficient memory in
your system for the applications you use. Antivirus and malware programs can run a more
thorough check. They can see if your system’s resources are being impacted by viral infections
and registry errors. They’ll help you correct them, too.
Internet Browsing is Slow or Unresponsive
• PROBLEM
• If your internet is slow or unresponsive, it could be a combination of software and hardware
issues. But if you’ve already checked that your WiFi or LAN network connection is active and
strong, the lag could result from conflicts in the IP address registration. That can be fixed by
rebooting your modem or router. If it still doesn’t fix the issue, the problem could be the browser
you are using.
• SOLUTION
• Over time, browser performance can bog down from a large browsing history and cache. There
may also be failing browser extensions that slow down performance. Make a practice of clearing
your internet search history and cache regularly to keep your browser running efficiently. If all
else fails, you can try reinstalling your browser or using a different one altogether to see if you
experience the same issues.
Your Seeing BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)
• PROBLEM
• There is nothing scarier than working on an important document only to be greeted by the
BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). This STOP error is almost certainly hardware-related and
unfortunately, could signal significant system failures.
• SOLUTION
• However, it’s not necessarily hopeless. In fact, a simple reboot could be all you need to fix
the issue. In most cases, however, further diagnostics are necessary to find the cause of the
issue. If the blue screen appears, you’ll see a line of white text that identifies the problem
your computer is having. You can easily look these codes up online to narrow down the
issue and work toward a solution or seek assistance.
Screen Display is Truncated or has Low
Resolution
• PROBLEM
• If you restart your computer and see that the resolution has changed or desktop icons and
texts are truncated, it’s usually related to your graphics card. Many times, you simply need to
update your graphics drivers.
• SOLUTION
• If you know the brand or model of your card, you can go to the manufacturer’s website and
download the latest software for the device. If taking this step still doesn’t fix the issue,
there could be larger issues with your hardware. In rare cases, you may need to replace the
graphics card altogether to solve the issue. However, in most cases, the issue is software-
related.
5 Network Problems
• Unknown Assets on the Network
• Abuse of User Account Privileges
• Unpatched Security Vulnerabilities
• A Lack of Defense in Depth
• Not Enough IT Security Management
Unknown Assets on the Network
• PROBLEM
• There are many businesses that don’t have a complete inventory of all of the IT assets that
they have tied into their network. This is a massive problem. If you don’t know what all of
the assets are on your network, how can you be sure your network is secure?
• SOLUTION
• The easiest fix for this is to conduct a review of all the devices on your network and identify
all of the various platforms they run. By doing this, you can know what all of the different
access points are on your network and which ones are most in need of security updates.
Abuse of User Account Privileges
• PROBLEM
• According to data cited by the Harvard Business Review, for the year of 2016, “60% of all attacks
were carried out by insiders.” Whether it’s because of honest mistakes (accidentally sending info
to the wrong email address or losing a work device), intentional leaks and misuse of account
privileges, or identity theft arising from a phishing campaign or other social engineering attack
that compromises their user account data, the people inside your business represent one of the
biggest security problems you’ll ever face.
• SOLUTION
• However, there are ways to minimize your risk in case of an insider attack. For example, if your
company uses a policy of least privilege (POLP) when it comes to user access, you can limit the
damage that a misused user account can do. In a POLP, every user’s access to the various systems
and databases on your network is restricted to just those things that they need to do their jobs.
Unpatched Security Vulnerabilities
• PROBLEM
• Many businesses are concerned with “zero day” exploits. These exploits are those unknown
issues with security in programs and systems that have yet to be used against anyone.
However, zero day vulnerabilities aren’t the problem—unpatched known vulnerabilities are
the problem.
• SOLUTION
• The easiest fix for this problem is to maintain a strict schedule for keeping up with security
patches. Also, gradually changing the programs and operating systems on your network to
make them the same can simplify this process. For example, if every system is Windows-
based or Mac-based (rather than a hodgepodge of Mac, Windows, Linux, etc.), then you
only have to keep track of Mac OS or Windows OS security patch schedules and alerts.
A Lack of Defense in Depth
• PROBLEM
• Eventually, despite all of your best efforts, there will be a day where an attacker succeeds in
breaching your network security. However, just how much damage this attacker will be
capable of depends on how the network is structured. The problem is that some businesses
have an open network structure where once an attacker is in a trusted system, they have
unfettered access to all systems on the network.
• SOLUTION
• If the network is structured with strong segmentation to keep all of its discrete parts
separate, then it’s possible to slow down the attacker enough to keep them out of vital
systems while your security team works to identify, contain, and eliminate the breach.
Not Enough IT Security Management
• PROBLEM
• Another common issue for many companies is that even when they have all of the best cybersecurity solutions in
place, they might not have enough people in place to properly manage those solutions. When this happens, critical
cybersecurity alerts may get missed, and successful attacks may not be eliminated in time to minimize damage.
However, finding a large enough internal IT security team to manage all of your needs can be an expensive and
time-consuming process. Qualified professionals are in demand, and they know it.
• SOLUTION
• To build up IT security staff quickly, many businesses use the services of a dedicated partner such as Compuquip
Cybersecurity. This allows these businesses to access a full team of experienced cybersecurity professionals for a
fraction of the cost of hiring them full-time internally. Some businesses use these cybersecurity solutions partners to
shore up their IT security departments in the short-term while they’re preparing their own internal cybersecurity
teams.
