SON for LTE

Overview and objectives

Hi!
SON functionality is central to many elements of the LTE system. The standardisation of SON
has been driven by operators who are very keen to use SON to lower their network OPEX
expendature. Therefore it is very important for Ericsson support staff to have a thorough
understanding of the SON features and functionality in order to respond to the operators
questions. Personnel involved in service delivery also need to have a detailed understanding of
SON, as many of the SON functions will change the way that they design, deploy, tune and
optimize LTE networks.

Objectives

• Explain LTE SON drivers, requirements and vision

• Describe which SON features exist within LTE RAN
• Describe functionality provided by SON
• Describe how SON features are activated
• Describe parameters used to control SON
• Explain customer benefits of SON
• Understand the function of future SON features
Why learn about son features

• Know all the SON features

What is son?

A concept created by operators to push for lower OPEX in LTE

Documented in use cases that identifies areas to improve

Reasons for SON automation:

• Previously manual processes that are automated
• Processes require automation because they are too fast, too
granular, and/or too complex for manual intervention.
