Hubbell – The Only End to End PoE Lighting Solution

•PoE takes the Ethernet closer to the luminaire for both power and
data and eliminates the hardware challenges of data exchange.

•Everything is easier when using Category cable and PoE allows

for greater opportunity for controls.

•With Hubbell’s huge datacom footprint, PoE is a natural.

What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

• Definition:
• Power over Ethernet (PoE) is an intelligent building infrastructure
solution that permits the transmission of DC power and data
communication over a traditional twisted-pair Ethernet cable.

Traditional LED Lighting and Efficiency

• Traditional LED lighting uses a dedicated electrical facility

to power the lights.
• LEDs are solid state DC devices (diodes)
• A driver (ballast) converts AC to DC
• the conversion from AC to DC is inefficient
• energy is lost in the form of heat
PoE Benefits

• Lower Installation Costs

• Separate/Redundant electrical facility not required at end device
• Lower deployment costs
• Simplified Installation
• Easily deployed Category 6 or 6A cabling
• Centralized Backup Power
• Continuous operation during power interruptions
• Centralized Power Management
• Remote monitoring and control
• Safe Power
• No damage to non-PoE devices of legacy peripherals
IEEE Standard References

• IEEE 802.3 defines Ethernet Standard

• Clause 33 defines PoE
• 802.3af – 2003 - DTE Power via MDI (aka PoE)
• 802.3at – 2009 - DTE Power Enhancements (aka PoE+)
• 802.3bt – in committee - DTE Power via MDI over 4-Pair (aka PoE++)

Server/Controller • Today PoE can provide up to 60 watts per “Node Circuit” to a single
Workstation fixture or multiple fixtures.
• 100 watt PoE is coming.
• Improving lumen per watt ratio will increase fixture count per “Node
Circuit” and reduce cost/watt
• All components (fixture, switch, and sensor) are all individually
addressable.
