Communication Ethics

• What is ethics?
• Why do you think there should be ethics in communication?
• What problems can arise when people are not ethical in their
communication?
REMEMBER:

• It is important to understand that whatever we communicate should be

guided by certain ethical principles.
According to the US National Communication
Association

• Ethical communication is fundamental to responsible thinking, decision-

making, and the development of relationships and communities within and
across contexts, cultures, channels, and media.
• Moreover, ethical communication enhances human worth and dignity by
fostering truthfulness, fairness, responsibility, personal integrity, and
respect for self and others.
4 Ethical principles of communication
1. They advocate truthfulness, accuracy, honest, and reason as essential to
the integrity of communication
2. Freedom of expression, diversity of perspective, and tolerance of dissent
to achieve the informed and responsible decision-making fundamental
society.
3. Condemn communication that degrades individuals and humanity through
distortion, intimidation, coercion, and violence, and through the
expression of intolerance and hatred.
4. Communicators should accept responsibility for the short-and long-term
consequences of our own communication and expect the same of others.
Remember:

• Every time we communicate, we should consider the consequences of our

actions.

• What if people were more responsible in their use of communication?

Activity:

• Class will be divided into four groups. Each group should prepare a skit that
will show one ethical principle and what could happen when it is violated.
Groups are encouraged to get real-world examples from current events.
