How To Install a Auto Warning Telltale

Auto-warning Telltale

The Golder Auto-Warning single height Telltale

has been designed specifically for India to
provide additional instantaneous warning of
movement occurring in a rockbolted extraction
zone and has the same action levels as the rotary
telltale.

This is of particular value in mines with very

stable roof conditions or in dynamic mining
situations, such as pillar extraction operations,
where workman and equipment are operating
close
to a developing goaf.

The LED is configured to flash when the indicator

shows greater than 5mm of roof deformation.

Step 1

Drill a vertical 28 mm/35 mm

35 mm Ø
diameter hole in the roof

Min: 4.5 m
to 4m minimum above
the roofline.

Step 1

Drill a vertical 35 mm/43 mm

diameter hole in the roof to 5 m 35-43 mm Ø

above the roofline.

Step 2

A A

Remove the telltale from its packaging. Unwind the anchor

wires, taking care not to tangle the wires and check that the
water sleeves are fully located to the top of the reference
tube.

Step 3

Connect the telltale

installation rods together
ensuring the special adapter
is at the top.

Step 4

Clip the anchor spring

on the telltale wire into
the adapter at the top
of the installation rods
FIRST.

Step 5

Insert the anchor spring and the

installation rods into the mouth
Anchor spring
of the hole, ensuring that the
trailing wire hangs freely and
does not get tangled.

Step 6

‘Anchor spring

Push the installation rods

to the back of the roof hole,
remove rods and ensure the
Anchor spring is firmly in place.

Step 9

Keeping the anchor wires under Anchor spring

tension, slide the telltale
reference tube up the anchor
wires and install the reference
tube into the hole.
Push the reference tube fully into
the hole to ensure that the
stabilising fins locate against the
hole mouth.

Step 10

Slide the telltale up the

anchor wire into the
reference tube and align
the telltale zero line (top
of the green band) to be
level with the bottom of the
reference tube. Ferrule

January 18, 2020 13

Step 11

Slide the free ferrule from the

end of the hanging wire until it
contacts the end of the telltale.

Carefully position the ferrule

on the wire such that the
telltale indicator is reading
zero, then crimp the ferrule
lightly.

Step 12

Once satisfied with the position and the telltale is set

at zero, crimp the ferrule 3 times to secure it in place.

Reading Telltales

 It should be the responsibility of the MINER each shift to record the tell
tales by colour for all active areas in the section.
 A book should be kept at the section WAITING PLACE in which each
shifts tell tale readings are recorded.
 Where a Auto Warning Telltale is triggered (Flashing) the workforce
should be withdrawn immediately, fenced off and the Shift Boss
informed.
 This is then logged in the Shift Boss’s statutory shift report, together with
comment on any remedial actions taken.
 Only after the affected area has been inspected by the Rockbolting
Engineer and appropriate additional support installed and deemed to be
safe can the temporary barriers be removed.
 Thereafter, the Shift Boss should record the millimetre reading of the
relevant telltales until stability has been re-established.

Reading Telltales

 Once per week, the MINER should, in addition to recording his shiftly
observations by colour, record the millimetre reading on each telltale in
his section (active areas).
 This information should be recorded on a weekly sheet, which should be
passed to the nominated ROOF CONTROL AUDITOR for trend
analysis.
