BASKETBALL

HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
• The game of basketball was invented by Dr. JAMES
NAISMITH, who was born in 1861 in Ramsay Township,
Ontario, Canada. He graduated as a physician at McGill
University in Montreal and was mainly interested in sport
physiology.
• In 1891, while Naismith was working a physical education
instructor at the YMCA International Training School in the
United States, He was Faced dilemma of finding in two
weeks an indoor game to make available for the “athletic
diversion” for the student of the School for Christian
Workers.
HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
• After scrapping the idea of adapting outdoor
games such as soccer and lacrosse, Naismith
recalled the idea of game during his younger
days known as “duck-on-a-rock”. The game
involved accuracy skills in knocking a “duck”
off the top of a big rock by throwing another
rock at all.
• Basketball was not exactly as how it is known
today. The first game was played using a
soccer ball and two peach baskets nailed
several feet high intended as goals on a court
that was just half the size of a regulation court.
The bottom of the baskets were not removed,
so every time a ball was shot into the basket, it
had to be poked out using a long pole.
HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
• The sport became an instant success, The popularity of the
game quickly grew nationwide, and was introduced in many
countries thereafter. Although Naismith never saw how the
game progress into a spectacular sport we appreciate these
days, he had the honor to witness his creation as an
Olympic sport at the 1936 games held in berlin.
• Basketball was introduced in the Philippines by the Young
Men’s Christian association (YMCA) of America. Soon after,
it became the most popular sport in the country replacing
soccer.
HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
• Basketball was first introduce to Filipinos within
the historic walls of Intramuros, Manila as what
some historians noted. The Philippines was
among the world’s first basketball-playing
nations. From the 1910’s to the early 1930s,the
Philippines dominated the Far Eastern Games
basketball tournament winning 9 out of 10
basketball championships.

THE REGULATION OF BASKETBALL
COURT
• Basketball courts come in different sizes
based on the level and type of basketball
being played. A professional NBA court is
94’ x 50’ | 28.65 x 15.24 m. Courts are
comprised of several foundational
components: the baskets, the three-point
arcs, free-throw (foul) lines, and the half
court line. Indoor courts are usually made
with polished wood (often maple), while
outdoor courts are typically made from
paving, concrete, or asphalt.
THE REGULATION OF BASKETBALL

1. A team is composed of five players that includes two
guards, two forwards, and one center.

assist the referees.

circle of the court.

POSITION ON THE
BASKETBALL COURT:
1. POINT GUARD
 The point guard (also known as
the floor general or the 'one') is
often one of the shortest players
on the team and is responsible
for advancing the basketball up
the court and setting up the
team's offense.

 This requires the point guard to

be highly skilled at dribbling and
passing while rarely turning the
basketball over to the
opposition.
POSITION ON THE
BASKETBALL COURT:
2. SHOOTING GUARD
 The shooting guard (also known
as the off guard or 'two') is often
one of the shorter players on the
team and generally starts an
offensive possession on the wing.

 This is a scoring position and is

often be filled by the team's best
outside shooter. But the shooting
guard position requires more than
outside shooting.
POSITION ON THE
BASKETBALL COURT:
3. SMALL FORWARD
 The small forward (also known as the
'three') is often the most versatile of
the 5 basketball positions on the court
both offensively and defensively.

 They're long and athletic which allows

them to be incredibly disruptive on the
defensive end of the court and usually
makes them the team's best defensive
player.

 The best small forwards also have an

offensive game.
POSITION ON THE
BASKETBALL COURT:
4. POWER FORWARD
 The power forward (also known
as the 'four') is usually the
second tallest player on the
team and is required to be both
strong and skilled.

 In past years, the player in this

position always played close to
the rim and scored the majority
of their points in the paint.
POSITION ON THE
BASKETBALL COURT:
5. CENTER
 The center (also known as the 'five') is
usually the tallest and strongest player on
the team and spends most of the game
close to the basket.

 Offensively, most centers don't have a

consistent midrange shot or a three-point
shot, nor are they typically the focus of
most offenses.

 Instead, they will score often score the

majority of their points by staying close to
the rim and scoring off offensive rebounds
or by receiving short passes when a
perimeter player penetrates and their
defender is forced to provide help defense.
BASIC SKILL IN BASKETBALL
A. DRIBBLING
 Dribbling is done by continuously bouncing the ball on
the floor with the use of the hand
B. SHOOTING
 In order to score a point, you need to shoot the ball into
the basketball ring.
C. PASSING
 Passing is the movement of the ball from one player to a
receiver in the same team.
KINDS OF PASSES IN
BASKETBALL
1. CHEST PASS
 This is the most common
pass done by players in
which the ball is held by
both hands from the chest
of the passer, who does a
straight pass and throw
with a snap of the wrist, to
the chest of the receiver.
KINDS OF PASSES IN
BASKETBALL
2. BOUNCE PASS
 The ball is given to a
teammate by bouncing
the ball on the floor a
meter away from the
receiver.
KINDS OF PASSES IN
BASKETBALL
3. OVERHEAD PASS
 The Ball comes from
overhead of the passer to
the chest of the receiver.
KINDS OF PASSES IN
BASKETBALL
4. UNDERHAND PASS
 This kind of pass that usually executed when a passer
is closely guarded.
5. BASEBALL PASS
 The ball is thrown by the passer overhead. This kind of
pass is very difficult to control as it a long pass that
travels the length of the basketball court.
