ENHANCED PHOTOCATALYTIC
MEMBRANE USING CARBON DOTS/
TITANIUM OXIDE FOR DEGRADATION
OF PHARMACEUTICALS
INTRODUCTION

 Use of semiconductor in photocatalysis to treat pollutants is largely limited

under solar irradiation.
 Modification of semiconductor is needed to extend the absorption range
from UV to visible range.
 The integration of photocatalysis with membrane processes may degrade
the pollutant and retain the photocatalyst on the membrane.

PROBLEM STATEMENTS

Poor solar energy absorption Post-reaction separation step

electron-hole pairs
 Low reutilization rate
 Sunlight contains only a small
fraction of UV light  Agglomeration of photocatalyst
suspended in pollutant solution
 Long term exposure to UV
radiation can cause adverse
effect to human 2

SYNTHESIS METHOD OF NANOHYBRID COMPOSITES

 Simple and effective route to prepare

EX-SITU SYNTHESIS APPROACH nanocomposites.
 All starting materials for CD and photocatalyst
are added together to obtain a co-
synthesized hetero-structure
 CD and photocatalyst TiO2 were prepared
separately beforehand  Adv.: Prevents particle agglomeration while
maintaining a good spatial distribution
 Pre-made CD then disperse into TiO2
nanoparticles through mixing to form  Disadv: Unreacted materials might influence
composites the properties of the final material
 Key challenge : Particles agglomeration can
significantly reduce the photocatalytic
activity of nanocomposite IN-SITU SYNTHESIS APPROACH

N-CD/TIO2 IMMOBILIZED ON MEMBRANE

 Complicated procedure involving multi-steps

BLENDING WITHIN MEMBRANE MATRIX
(coating solution preparation, membrane
surface activation, and surface coating)
 Facile membrane preparation, only blending  Membrane morphology (porosity) may not
of catalyst into polymer solution is required greatly affected
before membrane fabrication.  Detach of catalyst from membrane
 Membranes consisted of more porous  High photocatalytic activity due to the high
structure accessibility of the catalysts to light
 Low possibility of catalyst leaching irradiation
 The entrapment of TiO2 in the inner layer
shielded the penetration of light, thus COATING ON MEMBRANE SURFACE
compromised photocatalytic activities

LITERATURE REVIEW

WHY NITROGEN DOPING IS NEEDED?

Bare surface of CD exposed to contaminants and
react with organic molecules resulted in low
fluorescent efficiency.
Surface passivation forms a thin insulating capping
layer that shields CD from the adhesion of impurities
Nitrogen doped CD can induce charge delocalization,
lower work function of carbon and enhance
photoluminescence
