WHAT IS HERESY???

• Heresy is any belief or theory that is strongly at


variance with established beliefs or customs, in
particular the accepted beliefs of a church or
religious organization. A heretic is a proponent of
such claims or beliefs.
WHAT IS MARCIONISM???

• Early Christian dualist belief system


• originated in the teachings of Marcion of
Sinope
• year 144

MARCION OF
SINOPE
BELIEF

• Jesus was the savior sent by God, and Paul the


Apostle was his chief apostle
• Rejected the Hebrew Bible and the God of
Israel.
• There are two gods – creator and redeemer
WHO IS MARCION OF SINOPE??

• Marcion preached that the god who sent Jesus into the
world was a different, higher deity than the creator god of
Judaism.
• He considered himself a follower of Paul the Apostle, who
he believed to have been the only true apostle of Jesus
Christ.
GNOSTICISM

• Gnosticism is a modern name for a variety of


ancient religious ideas and systems,
originating in Hellenistic Judaism and the
Jewish Christian milieux in the first and
second century AD
MARCION CANONS

• Marcion was the first to introduce a Christian Canon


(a general law, rule, principle, or criterion)

• His canon consisted of eleven books and were grouped


into two sections the Evangelikon (gospel of maricon) and
the Apostolikon (Pauline epistles)
TEACHINGS
• Many of the teachings if Christ are incompatible with the
actions of the God of the Old Testament

• Marcion declared that Christianity was distinct from and in


opposition to Judaism

• Christ was not a Jewish Messiah, but a spiritual entity that


was sent by the Monad

WHO IS MONTANUS?

• A.D 170
• Asia Minor
• Asiatic cult called Cybele
• Gift of prophecy
• Priscilla and Maximilla
• “In his lust for leadership, he became obsessed and
would suddenly fall into frenzy and convulsions. He
began to be ecstatic and speak and talk strangely,
and prophesied contrary to that which was the
custom from the beginning of the church.Those
who heard him were convinced he was possessed.”
(Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, 5.16.1)
TEACHINGS

• Montanus claimed that he was a prophet of God


• He said that the towns of Pepuza and Tymion (where he
lived) will be the new Jerusalem
• His teachings is above the church
• Made a prophesy that Jesus would return very very soon
THE END OF MONTANISM

• The year 861 [=549-50 AD] … At this time the destructive


heresy of Montanus was put to shame and uprooted.
