CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
REVIEW OF
RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter presents the review on related literature. It
represents the gathered information from different sources which
will help one to understand the presented study.
The fundamental aim of education is to make an all-round
development of a child. Development in intellectual, physical
and moral. Education makes the development possible. Because
education plays a vital role in making a student a social
intellectual. “Students learn by seeing, hearing and doing”

This is possible through education. But then, to fulfill those
kinds of development we need the co-curricular activities.
Ipgale (2014), stated that co-curricular activities is not put in the
traditional curriculum but it can develop students physical, moral,
social and emotional development.
Bernard (2008), stated that “co-curricular activities is not put in the
academic curriculum but are acknowledge to be essential part of the
life of an educational institution” where, in joining different activities
that were established in the school, it can developed intellectual,
physical, moral and it can strengthen self-confidence, leadership and
cooperation of a students. Being active in participating different
activities will help a student to develop holistically, because students
should not only focus entirely on their studies; and instead should
learn to balance between their studies and their involvement in co-
curricular activities.
Williams (2017), argued that being both academically and
co-curricularly talented, help a student face the world
basically helps them to develop their personality.
Co-curricular activities, and its importance to the life of a
students:
1. Physical Development - due to many outdoor games there
happens physical exercise of a students, with the help of this
exercise, physical development is possible among students.
Example is in the field of sports such as volleyball,
badminton etc. Besides that “co-curricular activities will help
you to be fit and healthy.
All the toxic substances in your body will be removed whenever you sweat
either your playing sports carrying activities that require a lot of physical
movement:” (Education, 2016).
2. Moral Development - on behalf of the activities students get moral
development for instance in reading competition such as story telling
competition, poetry reading and etc.

3. Social Development - in participating such activities a students develop


his/her social.
Co-curricular activities improves the all-round development of students,
enable the students to make positive sense and competition sense for future and
for their life.
It can be also improve the sense of leadership in students and make aware them
about responsibilities.

Co-curricular activity is very useful for society. In this
role of co-curricular activities students life are very
important, these activities are really important as they have
a potential of developing the intellectual of a student.
Those cited information above are relevance on this
study because through that, they can understand thoroughly
about the co-curricular activities and how does co-
curricular activities develop the student’s life.
Statement of Problem

The aim of this research study is to identify the insights


of the students about the co-curricular activities.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions;
1.)What is the perception of the students on the co-
curricular activities?;
2.)What do students get in participating on different
activities?
3.)What is the importance of co-curricular into the life of a
students?
Significance of the study
This research study is significant to the students, because in
participating such activities, it helps the students to develop their
abilities and skills. It help them to grow individually, socially and
mentally.

The said study give significance also to the parents. Parents


need to understand that these activities are not scholastic. They
help in the overall social development of the students by helping
unlock their talents living inside them, so that parents encourage
their children to participate in such programs and activities,
wholeheartedly.
The study is significant to the teachers, because
teachers also take the responsibility on how the
activity proceed. The teacher can be a planner,
leader, innovator and motivator of the students. By
the help of the teachers, students can be motivated
that’s why they participating to lots of activities.
Scope and Limitation

This study was conducted to determine the


perceptions of the students about the co-
curricular activities at Cadaloria High School
during the school year 2018-2019. The
researcher will conduct a face-to-face interview
to collect data among the twenty (20) selected
senior high school students.
Definition of terms

Co-curricular - this term refers to an activity at school


or colleges.

Wholeheartedly - this term means with complete


sincerity and commitment.

Hidden - this term refers to the vies of the clubs and


organization.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design

This chapter includes the research design, research


locale, sample respondents, research instruments,
data collection procedure and data analysis. This
study made trough narrative. This kind of design was
being used to settle an accurate perceptions, views
and insights of the respondents about the importance
of co-curricular activities in their life.
Research Environment
The said research study was conducted at Cadaloria High
School, particularly at the Senior High Department.

Sample of respondents
In this study there are twenty respondents will be asked and
answered the prepared questions. That composed twenty senior
high school. The respondents are composed of 15 females and 5
males. They will be selected/choosen because they are active
participant of different co-curricular activities in the said school.
Their average ranges from 89-93.
Research Instrument
In this research study it uses two instruments. It follows a
checklist for knowing the activities that the respondents involved
with. Specifically, respondents have to answered the following
questions:
1. Students profile in terms of age
2. Students profile in terms of gender
3. Students profile in terms of average in quarter 1
4. What are the activities in the school that they are involved with.
5. Perceptions of the students on the co-curricular activities
6. What do students get in participating different activities
7. What is the importance of co-curricular in the life of a student
Data Gathering Procedure

During the lunch break the researchers was


formally started the collecting data among
the choosen respondents through face-to-
face interview and the researchers was end
up the interview in March 20, 2019.
Data Analysis

The data gathered in this research is very


essential, because it shall be used to
determine and identify how does co-
curricular activities can helps the life of a
student.
