Cloud computing – History
 Evolved over a period of time.
 Roots traced back to Application Service
Providers in the 1990’s.
 Parallels to SaaS.
 Evolved from Utility computing and is a
broader concept.
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is
defined as the storage,
management,
processing, and
accessing information
and other data stored in
a specific server.
It is a pay-per-use model for enabling available,
convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of
configurable computing resources.

In Simple Way..,,

Cloud Computing = Virtualization + Standardization +

Automation.
Why Cloud Computing?
Data centers are notoriously
underutilized, often idle
85% of the time:
o Over provisioning
o Insufficient capacity planning
and sizing
o Improper understanding of
scalability requirements .
Common Cloud Characteristics
o Massive scale
o Virtualization
o Free software
o Autonomic computing
o Multi-tenancy
o Geographically distributed systems
o Advanced security technologies
o Service oriented software

Architecture:
The cloud computing architecture is comprised of two
significant parts:

1)Front end:
It is the side at which the user of the computer or the client himself
is able to access.

2)Back end:
It is the cloud itself, which is the collection of all related information
saved in the servers that the client wishes to have access to.

These two ends are connected through a network, usually

the Internet, because it provides remote access to all the users of the
cloud.
3 Cloud Delivery Models
• Cloud Software as a Service (SaaS)
- Use provider’s applications over a network.
- Ex:- Gmail, GoogleCalender, Payroll, IBM Lotus Live.

• Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS)

- Deploy customer-created applications to a cloud.
- Ex:- Middleware, Intergation, Messaging, Information,
connectivity, IBM Virtual images, Google Appengine

• Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

- Rent processing, storage, network capacity, and other
fundamental computing resources.
- Ex:- IBM Blue house, VMWare, Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure

Public, Private and Hybrid
clouds
• Public:-Open for use by
general public. Exist beyond
firewall, fully hosted and
managed by the vendor.
• Private:-Within the
boundaries(firewall) of the
organization.
• Hybrid:-Combination of both
the public and private clouds.
Benefits:
• It eliminates the need to buy an additional
number of hardware for all employees.
• Cost effective solutions to key business
demands.
• Move workloads to improve efficiency
Commercial Clouds:
Primary Concerns:
Security
-Use of technical systems to automate authorization for access
and authentication for certain safeguards
Privacy
-Privacy by Design
Privacy by Default
Privacy in Deployment
