CONDUCTORS

And
INSULATORS
CONDUCTORS
Conductors are substances
through which electric
current can flow easily.
GOLD
A soft yellow metal that is very valuable and that is used especially in
jewelry
SILVER
A soft grayish-white metal that is very valuable and is used to make jewelry,
coins, knives, forks, etc.
COPPER
A common reddish metallic element that is ductile and malleable and is one
of the best conductors of heat and electricity
ALUMINUM
A silver metal that is strong and light and that is used for making many
products.
TUNGSTEN
A hard metal that is used to make the thin wire in light bulbs and to harden
other metals (such a s steel). A gray-white heavy high-melting ductile hard
polyvalent metallic element that resembles chromium and molybdenum in
many of its properties and is used especially in carbide materials and
electrical as lamp filaments.
BRASS
A yellow metal that is made by combining copper and zinc
PLATINUM
A heavy, silver-colored metal that is difficult to melt and that is used
especially in expensive jewelry. A precious grayish-white noncorroding
ductile malleable heavy metallic element that fuses difficulty and is used
especially in chemical ware and apparatus and in dental and jewelry alloys.
IRON
A heavy type of metal that is very common, occurs naturally in blood, and is
used to make steel and in many products. A silver-white malleable ductile
magnetic heavy metallic element that readily rusts in moist air.
NICKEL
A silver-white hard malleable ductile metallic element capable of a high
polish and resistant to corrosion that is used chiefly in alloys and as a catalyst
ZINC
A bluish-white metal that is very common and is used especially to make
brass and as a protective coating for things made of iron and steel.
TIN
A soft faintly bluish-white lustrous low-melting crystalline metallic element
that is malleable and ductile at ordinary temperatures and that is used
especially in containers, as a protective coating, in tinfoil, and in soft solders
and alloys
LEAD
A bluish-white soft malleable ductile plastic but inelastic heavy metallic
element found mostly in combination and used especially in pipes, cable
sheaths, batteries, solder, and shields against radioactivity.
INSULATORS/
NONCONDUCTORS
INSULATORS/ NONCONDUCTORS - are
substances that do not allow an
electric current to pass through.
GLASS ENAMEL
A material like colored glass that is heated until it is liquid and then used to
decorate the surface of metal, glass or pottery.
SLATE
A type of hard rock that splits easily into thin layers.
MARBLE
A limestone that is often polished and used in buildings and statues
MICA
Any of various colored or transparent mineral silicates crystallizing in
monoclinic forms that readily separate into heavy thin leaves
PORCELAIN
A hard, white substance that is very delicate and that is made by baking clay
ASBESTOS
A soft gray mineral that does not burn, that was used especially as a
building material in the past, and that can cause serious diseases of the lungs
when people breathe its dust.
CERAMICS
Made of clay that has been heated to a very high temperature so that it
becomes hard.
SHELLAC
A clear liquid that dries into a hard coating and that is put on a surface to
protect it.
RESINS
A yellow or brown sticky substance that comes from some trees and that is
used to make various products.
SILICON GUMS
A chemical element that is found in the Earth’s crust and is used especially in
computers and electronics.
ASPHALT
A black substance that is used for making roads. A dark bituminous
substance that is found in natural beds and is also obtained as a residue in
petroleum refining and that consists chiefly of hydrocarbons.
PITCH
A black or dark viscous substance obtained as a residue in the distillation of
organic materials and especially tars.
BEESWAX
Wax made by bees that is used for making candles and other products.
PARAFFIN WAX
A waxy crystalline flammable substance obtained especially from distillates
of wood, coal, petroleum, or shale oil that is a complex mixture of
hydrocarbons and is used chiefly in coating and sealing, in candles , in rubber
compounding.
RUBBER
An elastic substance that is obtained by coagulating the milky juice of any of
various tropical plants and is essentially a polymer of isoprene, and is
prepared as sheets and then dried.
EBONITE
Hard rubber especially when black
VEGETABLES AND ANIMAL OIL
An oil of plant and animal origin especially a fatty oil from animal and seeds
or fruits.
PAPER
The material that is used in the form of thin sheets for writing or printing on,
wrapping things, etc…
WOOD
A hard substance that makes up the stems and branches of tress and shrubs.
COTTON
A soft, white material that grows on the seeds of a tall plant and that is used
to make cloth.
LINEN
A smooth, strong cloth made from flax
VARNISH
A liquid that is spread on a surface and that dries to form a hard, shiny coating
CELLULOID/PLASTIC
A tough flammable thermoplastic composed essentially of cellulose nitrate
and camphor
CELLOPHANE
Regenerated cellulose in thin transparent sheets especially for packaging
BAKELITE
Used for any various synthetic resins and plastics
SILK
A smooth, soft, and shiny cloth that is made from thread produced by
silkworms,.the thread is used to make silk.
FIBER
A thin thread of natural or artificial material that can be used to make cloth,
paper, etc..
