Properties of

Some Solution
Experiment 10
Objectives
1. To determine the effects of pressure and temperature on the
solubility of gas in a liquid.
2. To determine the effect of temperature on the solubility of
solid in a liquid.
3. To differentiate unsaturated, saturated and supersaturated
solution.
4. To test the miscibility of some liquids.
Materials

Cold soft drink (200 mL) 25 mL graduated cylinder Potassium nitrate with spatula
2 100 mL beaker Digital balance Ethylene glycol with dropper
Alcohol lamp Stirring rod Ether with dropper
Tripod Thermometer Vegetable oil with dropper
Wire Gauze Weighing Boat CCl4 with dropper
Water bath 6 10 mL test tubes with cracks
Procedure:
A. Solution of Gas in Liquid
1. Open a bottle of carbonated soft
drink. Observe for 1 minute.
2. Transfer some of its content into a
100-mL beaker. Observe again and
compare the effervescence to that
before pouring the liquid.
3. Heat the beaker with contents.
Observe further the effervescence.
Data and Results
A. Solution of Gas in Liquid
1. What gas escaped from liquid?
2. What caused the gas to escape?
3. Did the gas behave according to Henry’s law?
4. What is the effect of increasing the temperature on
the solubility of the gas in liquid.
Procedure
B. Solubility of solid in a Liquid
1. To a 250-mL beaker place 20 mL of tap
water at approximately room
temperature.
2. Add 3 grams of potassium nitrate and
dissolve it by stirring.
3. Test the potassium nitrate is saturated
by adding 3-gram portions of
potassium nitrate until no more
potassium nitrate dissolves at this
temperature.
Procedure
4. Heat the solution to 60° C and add 3
grams of potassium nitrate. Observe
the solution.
5. Cool the solution to room
temperature in a water bath. Be very
careful nit to disturb the solution
while it is being cooled.
6. As soon as the room temperature is
reached, stir the solution quickly.
Data and Results
B. Solution of Gas in Liquid
1. Did the particles of potassium nitrate dissolve in 60° C?
2. Why should you be very careful not to disturb the solution while it
was being cooled?
3. Was the solution still saturated while cooling?
4. What was formed while room temperature was reached and the
solution stirred quickly?
5. What is the effect of temperature on the solubility of potassium
nitrate in water?
Data and Results
6. Differentiate unsaturated, saturated and
supersaturated solution from the other.
Procedure
C. Solubility of a liquid in another liquid.
1. Mix the specified amount of each
liquid in the following combinations.
Observe whether they are completely
miscible or immiscible in each other.
Mixture:
a. ½ mL ethyl alcohol and ½ mL water
b. ½ ethylene glycol and ½ mL water
c. 1 mL vegetable oil and 1 mL water
d. ½ mL ether and ½ mL water
e. ½ mL CCl4 and ½ mL water
f. ½ mL ethyl alcohol and ½ mL CCl4
