Paragraph Example:
A Narrative Paragraph
The one day I spent in Morocco, Africa was an experience of a
lifetime. When I finally reached Morocco and got off the bus, there were four
little girls standing shoeless in the hot sun. After I swallowed my tears, I
could not even try to picture this in America as it is not something you often
see in the U.S. Meanwhile my tourist guide instructed me not to give them
money as it encouraged the children to beg; however, I was wearing four
silver bracelets. As I walked over to the girls, their eyes watched my every
move. Then I kneeled down to their level while I gave each girl a bracelet.
They stood there gleaming at me, for they were pleased. I felt completely in
disbelief that this tiny gesture could mean so much. Though this experience
was upsetting, and a huge culture shock, it will stay with me forever.

Coherent & Cohesive Paragraph
Coherence (the idea level):
• Semantic/rhetorical elements of writing
• developing claims and arguments
• supporting arguments
• connecting ideas
• synthesizing ideas
• organizing ideas
• clarifying ideas
Example of a Coherent Paragraph
There are a lot of good departments at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, but the
best one, in my view, is the English Education Department of the Faculty of
Educational Sciences for several reasons. First, almost all lessons at this
department use English as the language of instruction. Second, this department
has highly qualified lecturers who graduated from internationally reputable
universities in the United States of America, Australia, England, Germany, etc.
Finally, lecturers and students at this department always promote interactive
models of teaching and learning that are inspiring, motivating, and engaging, so
they always enjoy the teaching and learning atmosphere in the classroom. In
short, I love the English Education Department, and I am proud to be part of this
awesome department.
Coherent & Cohesive Paragraph
Cohesion (the syntactic level)
• Grammatical elements of writing
• How elements of a text are connected to one another
• Marked by cohesive devices or markers
Example of a Cohesive Paragraph
Close-up study of the planet Mars began when rockets were developed
that could send scientific instruments into space. In 1965, the first
observations of Mars were done by the American spacecraft Mariner
4, which flew near the planet to collect data and take photographs.
Four years later, more data and photographs were collected
by Mariners 6 and 7 as they flew past the planet. Then, in
1971, Mariner 9 actually went into orbit around Mars, and during the
following eleven months, sent back more than 7,000 images before
contact with the spacecraft was lost. The next major step, in 1976, was
the landing of two Viking crafts on two different areas of Mars’ surface.
These landers were able to send back important data about the
atmosphere of the planet.

concluding ideas
