SERVER 101

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Server Overview
• Server Types
• Server Form Factors
• Server Hardware Components
SERVER
A server computer acts as a service or resource
provider to client computers, by sharing the
resources within the network infrastructure.
What does a server do?

Provides ‘service’
Shares resources
and devices
Stores DATA
Opens gateway to
other system
Provides Processing
Power
Server Type Examples
Web Servers Database Servers
A Web Server may host Accepts requests for
websites or provide data, retrieves the data
access to content and it from its database (or
responds to requests requests data from
received from Web another node) and
passes the results back

File or Print Server

Security & manage a work group’s
Directory Servers data files and print jobs
provides authentication
and security services
including logged
information
management

Application Server
Virtualization Server shares its resources but
the underlying hardware that may also be used to run
provides computing resources to applications for users
support a particular guest virtual
machine (guest VM).

PCIE BUS
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
◦ The chip or chips that interpret and execute program instructions and
manage the functions of input, output, and storage devices.
◦ Some says “the Brain” of the computer.
Processor Core

◦ The number of cores of a CPU should be a top consideration. A higher

number of cores will assist a computer in multitasking and running multiple
programs.
Processor Clock Speed

◦ Clock speed is the term used for the operating frequency of a CPU, which
determines how fast it can process instruction.
EXERCISE

◦ Server with v3 processor

E5-2620 v3 6C 2.4Ghz processor
◦ Server with v4 processor
E5-2620 v4 8C 2.1Ghz processor
◦ How will you know the difference?

◦Multiply the no. of cores to the clock speed and compare

the result.

6C x 2.4Ghz = 14.4Ghz
8C x 2.1Ghz = 16.8Ghz

◦Note:
If the application that will be deployed on the server is on per core
per license scheme, stick to the exact no. of cores
Random Access Memory (RAM)

◦ RAM is a computer’s temporary memory, which exists as chips on the

motherboard near the CPU. It stores data or programs while they are being
used and requires power.
◦ Volatile Memory
Storage Drives
◦ it’s a device where files, data's, and programs are stored.
◦ Non-volatile Memory

DRIVE

SOLID STATE DRIVE

Peripheral Component Interconnected Express (PCIe)

◦ An interconnection system between a microprocessor and attached devices in which

expansion slots are spaced closely for high speed operation.
