 Several associations and industry leaders
consider the combined industries of tourism and
hospitality as one large industry – the tourism
and hospitality industry.
 Components:
 Food and beverages services
 Lodging services
 Recreation services
 Travel-related (tourism) services

 Food and Beverages
 Public looks for food and beverage service
everywhere – in hotels, motels, airlines, airports,
cruise ships, trains, and shopping malls.
 Lodging Component
 Provides overnight or even long-term services to
guests
 A place to sleep such as inns, motor hotels, lodges,
or motor inns.
 Recreation and Entertainment Component
 Entertainment originated from the traditional
duties of a host to entertain his or her guests,
whether they are neighbour or traveler from other
places.

 Travel and Tourism Component
 Ambrella term to refer to those business that
provide primary services to traveler
 Transportation
 To make it possible for people to go from one place to

DEFINITION OF TOURISM
Burkart and Medik (1997) five main characteristics of
tourism:
 Complexity
 Dynamic and Static Element
 Journey and stay are to-and-fro destinations
 Movement to destination is temporary and short-
term
 Destinations are visited for purposes.
DEFINITION OF TOURISM

 Multi-dimensional phenomenon
 Sum of phenomena and relationships and
relationships arising from the travel and stay of non-
residents, insofar as they do not lead to permanent
residence and are not connected to any earning
activity. (Prof. Hunziker and Krapf of Berne
University)
 Tourism is the temporary short-term movement to
people to destinations outside the places where they
normally live and work and their activities during
stay at these destinations.(Tourism Society in Britain
 May be defined in terms of particular activities
selected by choice and undertaken outside the home
environment. (Tourism Society in Cardiff)
DEFINITION OF HOSPITALITY
 Latin word hospitare, means “to receive a s a guest”.
 Words come from the same Latin root: hospital,
hospice, and hostel, which means a host who receives,
welcomes, and caters to the needs of the people who
are temporarily away from their home
MEANING OF TOURIST
 A person who visits a country other than that in
which he or she usually resides for a period of at
least 24 hours.
 Visitor means any person visiting a country other
than that of earning money.

ELEMENTS OF TRAVEL
 Distance – difference between local travel or
traveling within a person’s home community and
nonlocal travel or traveling away from home.
 Length of Stay at the Destination - criteria for
defining travelers is the length of stay at a
destination.

 Consists of what the tourist buys.
 Characteristics:

 Largely psychological in its attraction
 Tends to a vary in standard and quality over time

 Where the tourist visits and stays.
 Three (3) basic factors:
 Attraction
 Amenities or facilities
 Accessibility

 Passenger transport - provides the means to
reach the destination.
 Accommodation, food beverages, and
entertainment
 Travel agent / distributor of product & Tour
Operator / manufacturer of product

 Product is not brought to the consumer; rather,
the consumer has to travel and go to product to
purchase it.
 Products of tourism and hospitality are not used
up.
 Labor-intensive industry
