Failure
1. What is failure?
Failure is the state or condition of not meeting a
desirable or intended objective.

2. What are different failure criterias dependent on?

They depend on the brittleness or ductility of the
material.

Puck theory of failure
• Prof. Puck started his work in 1955, to develop the
first sailplane with an all glass fibre, with a low
drag laminar profile.

• He was the first one to publish the idea that fibre

failure (FF) and interfibre failure (IFF) should be
treated as two separate and independent failure
criteria.

• Corresponding to 6 stressings 6 corresponding strengths

exists and they are designated as follows,
R t , R c , Rt , Rt , Rt , Rt

• From Puck’s hypothesis the following conclusions can be

derived,
o Normal stress and shear stress on failure are deciding
factor for IFF
o Tensile stress supports fractures whereas compressive
stress prevents the IFF from shear stresses.
