Design of Interlocking

Concrete Blocks in Pavement

IRC: SP 63-2004
Interlocking Concrete Block Pavements are used in situations
such as: Footpaths, side walk, cycle tracks, residential street,
intersections, city streets etc.

Very high quality control as blocks are manufactured in

factory.

These are skid resistant and restrict the speed of vehicles to

Applications about 60kmph which is advantages for the city streets and
intersections.

The repairing of utilities beneath the road and maintenance

is easier in case of block pavement.

Preferred in heavily loaded areas like container depots and

ports to withstand the high stresses induced there.
Types and Shapes of Blocks
• The blocks can be interlocked horizontally and vertically
• The blocks are dentated at their faces for having better contact between adjoining blocks thus
enhancing interlocking effect and friction between them.
• The dentated blocks are further categorized into 3 groups:

Category A Category B Category C

• Dentated on all four faces • Dentated on only two • These are not dentated
sides type
• By their plan geometry
when keyed together • Their dimensional • Their dimensional accuracy

Different Categories of Block
• The interlocking blocks serve as wearing surface.
Composition of • It helps in reducing the stress imposed on subgrade
Block Pavement • It also helps in resisting pavement deformation
• The catalogue of designs are provided by IRC for
block pavement.

• The design is provided for:

 Lightly Trafficked pavement
Structural Design Block Pavement subjected to
of Concrete Block Commercial Traffic

Pavement • A design life of 20 years can be considered for

determining the repetitions of standard axles

• Design thickness is also based on subgrade CBR and

traffic volume.

Block and
Kerbs
• The concrete blocks on pavement tend to move sideways
and forward due to braking and maneuvering of vehicles.

• This tendency is countered at the edges by special edge

blocks and kerbs.
Drainage
in
Concrete
Block
Pavement

• It consist of subsurface drains surrounded by filter media or

geotextile.
• This would allow the water to pass through and also
prevent the escape of bedding/ jointing sand.
