KASBA GANPATI
 It is the presiding deity
(gramadevata) of the city.
 It is situated in Kasba Peth in
Pune.
 The actual name of the deity
here is Jayati Gajanan
meaning god of the win.
 Instead of the idol there is a
Tandala.
HISTORY OF KASBA GANPATI
In the year 1630, The Royal Queen Jijabai
Bhosale arrived in Pune with her son
Shivaji. Shivaji was disturbed by the
pathetic plight of the mavals, at a very
young age. At the age of 12, he vowed to
liberate the mavals from the mughal
powers. Around this time,Dadaji Kondev
reported that an idol of Lord Ganesh
was found near the house of Vinayak
Thakar, close to the residence of
Jijabai.
Jijabai perceived this as an
auspicious moment and promptly
decided to build a temple, which is
popularly known as the Kasba
Ganpati Mandir.
THE KASBA GANPATI TEMPLE
 This is one of the oldest temples in the city.
 The stone temple dates back to the
Yadava dynasty. It has also seen the
Peshwa dynasty.
 Adil Shah, the emperor from Bijapur had
devastated Pune during one of the wars,
thus destroying the temple with a plough
pulled by donkeys- a ritual that meant
that the civilisation of a particular place
was destroyed completely. It was then
that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his
mother re- erected the temple and
garnered the land here with a
golden plough- the indicator of
prosperity.
The temple has ground+1 upper
floor, nagarkhana (drum house),
Maruti temple and deepamala.
ARCHITECTURE OF THE
TEMPLE
 The temple has some elements of
architecture of the Yadava
dynasty.
 The wooden 'sabha mandap' exudes
typical Maratha architectural
traces.
 The interiors of the temple belong
to the Peshwa era while the
exteriors are of the Hemadpanthi
style of architecture.
Ground + 1 Upper floor – The main
temple is In Stone masonry and the
Sabha-mandap and adjoining
structure is a composite structure
built in load bearing Brick masonry
walls and Timber Column – Beam
frame.
THE GANPATI FESTIVAL

In 1893, Bal Gangadhar Tilak. initiated

the now famous Ganesh Festival. Due to
his influencing personality and
initiative, everyone started celebrating
this festival and thus it became a public
festival in 1893.
There was rivalry among the various
mandals regarding the privilege of
immersing the idol on the last day of the
Ganpati festival. Bal Gangadhar Tilak
resolved the rivalry and
declared the privilege of immersion
to Shri Kasba Ganpati, as it is the
local deity of Pune.
till 1925, Shri Kasba Ganpati Mandal
celebrated the festival within the
premises of the temple and from 1926 it is
celebrated in an enclosed mandap.
Presently, the ten days of the festival is
a platform to display ones talents
through various cultural programs thus
allowing a large number of devotees to
participate in the celebrations. On the
last day, Shri Kasba Ganpati plays the
leading role during the immersion
procession.
