PSE DEVELOPMENT: THE CHILD MAKES MEANING
IN THE SOCIAL WORLD

• What are children at 3?

• Learning about Myself…….
• Babies learn about themselves through
socialization with adults
• Their
accidental effects on the environment teach
them that they have an agency of their own and
encourage them to repeat their actions
PSE DEVELOPMENT: THE CHILD MAKES MEANING
IN THE SOCIAL WORLD
• Babies have awareness of their own appearance
• They can identify their names and gender

• Can differentiate between right and wrong

• Another emerging aspect of their identity:
Self-esteem
• The value a child assigns himself or herself in the
eyes of those whose opinion counts
LEARNING ABOUT MYSELF FROM 3-5:
TRANSITION

LEARNING ABOUT MYSELF FROM 3-5:
TRANSITION
• We are wrong to attempt to 'jolly’ children out of their

difficult feelings, and learning about sadness is a stage in
their emotional development.

• Rather than distracting children to try to make them

forget their feelings, sympathize with them to show that
they are being taken seriously.
LEARNING ABOUT MYSELF FROM 3-5:
SELF- CONCEPT
• Separation brings with it a very positive step in any
child’s learning: acquiring a sense of themselves as
‘ being a person’ in more than one setting
• Child focuses more consciously on his/her own identity
