History of AbOrtiOn
Abortion was used as a form of birth control in
ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome and probably
earlier.
In the Middle Ages in Western Europe it was generally
accepted in the early months of pregnancy. However,
in the 19th cent. opinion about abortion changed.

In 1869 the Roman Catholic Church prohibited abortion

under any circumstances

By the 1970s, abortion had been legalized in most European

countries and Japan; in the United States, under a 1973
Supreme Court ruling abortions are permitted during the
first six months of pregnancy.
In 1977 Congress barred the use of Medicaid funds for
abortion except for therapeutic reasons and in certain other
specified instances.

From 1995 to 2000 the U.S. Congress repeatedly passed,

but President Bill Clinton vetoed, a bill that would ban a rare
late-term method of abortion called by its critics “partial-birth
abortion.” Subsequent attempts by many U.S. states to ban this
method were contested in the courts, and in 2000 the Supreme
Court voided such laws that do not include an exception when
the health of the mother is endangered

In India, the abortion of female fetuses by couples

desiring a male child led (1994) to criminal penalties for prenatal
testing when done solely to determine the sex of the fetus; such
tests have been banned in parts of China for the same reason.
D & X PARTIAL - BIRTH ABORTION
is a commom term for the Intact Dilation & Extraction (D&X)
Abortion procedure. In PBA, procudure, a physicain delivers a baby
to the point where only the head remains inside the womb but then
punctures the back of the skull and removes the brain before
completing delivery.

How it is PERFORM
The baby kills into the third trimester as late as 32 weeks or
8 months.
Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist
grabs the baby's leg with forceps.

The baby's leg is pulled out into

the birth canal.
The abortionist delivers the
baby's entire body, except for the
head.

The abortionist jams scissors into the

baby's skull. The scissors are then
opened to enlarge the hole...

The scissors are removed and a suction

catheter is inserted. The child's brains are
sucked out, causing the skull to collapse.
The dead baby is then removed.
The Biblical Background, Historical
Development, Church positions and its Moral
Implications
You created every part of me; you put me together in my
Mother’s womb. I praise you b’coz you are to be feared; all
you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my heart.
When my bones were being formed, carefully put together in
my mother’s womb, when I was growing there in secret, you
knew that I was there-you saw me b4 I was born. ( Ps. 139:13-
16b, GNB )
ABORTION???????
Murder or birth control and family planning…
Amoral or moral perversion…
When does LIFE begin…
AYON SA BANAL NA KASULATAN!!!
Listen to his words
Obey his commandments
Value human life
Eternal life
Jesus demonstrated the love of God to the children often during His
ministry
He said, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones” (Mt.
18:10) GOD’s view of life b4 birth in the OT
“And if men struggle with each other and
strike a woman with a child so that she has a miscarriage, yet
there is no further injury, he shall be surely be fined as the
woman’s husband may demand of him; and he shall pay as
the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you
shall appoint as a penalty life for life. Cf. Exodus 21:22-23
When does life begin???
“Did not He who made me in the womb make him, and the
same one fashion us in the womb? ( Job 31:15 ).
“Thus says the Lord who made you and formed you from the
womb, who will help you, Do not fear, O Jacob my servant; and
you Jeshurun whom I have chosen. ( Is. 44;2 ).
“B4 I formed you in the womb I knew you, And B4 you were
born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the
nations”. ( Jer. 1:5 ).
OTHER REFFERENCES;
Ps 22:9-10 ; 58:3 ; 139:13-16b ; Jgs. 13:6-7 ; Lk. 1:15; Gal. 1:15
THE PROBLEM IS“WHEN” WE ACTUALLY BECOME SO???

COOL KLNG ‘TOL…….

(Gen 9:4) “He told them, “Only you shall not eat flesh with its
life, that is, its blood”. SO, ANO NGAYON???
Therefore, God considers blood to be the basis for life and
the shedding of human blood which results in death, to be
murder.
Science tells us that the heart of the human fetus
begins to form 18 days after conception. There is a
measurable heart beat 21-24 days after conception. Since
blood is flowing at this point, it is likely that blood formation
begins well before day 21.
Conclusion, this represents the LATEST date at which
we must consider the fetus to be human
Hist. Dev’t: Abortion NOT a 20th century phenomenon

1. DIDACHE 100 AD – oldest source of ecclesiastical law we

possess
- Didache 2:2 - “You shall not kill an unborn child or
murder a newborn
infant”.
2. Tertullian 220 AD – cruel necessity

3. Athenagoras of Athens – Supplication for the x\tians, 177AD

- Apol. 35 ANF 2, 147 – when we say that those women
who use drug to bring on abortion commit murder and will
have to give an account to God…

4. Origen 253-4 AD – creation is conceived as an eternal act.

5. “You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not
cause the new born to perish”.
Cf. Ep. ad Barnabae 19,5: PG 2, 777
Ep. ad Diognetum 5,6: PG 2, 1173
Tertullian, Apol. 9: PL 1, 319-320
6. St. Thomas in his Summa Theologica; Q.64 art 1

Q? Whether it is lawful to kill any living being.

“It wud seem unlawful to kill any living thing…it seems unlawful to
take the life of any living thing. Furthermore murder is a sin b’coz it
deprives a man of life.

7. Middle Ages – denied direct abortion

However, there are conditions like saving the life of the mother,
choosing lesser evil and fetus as unjust aggressor.
AYON SA BANAL NA IGLESIA….
1.GS #27 – abortion is a crime against humanity

2. CCC 2295 – Research and experimentation is not at all a

legitimate act to moral law.

3. 2nd plenary Council of the Phil. Art 382 – fight for the rights of the
unborn.
4. Pope Paul VI, Humanae Vitae par. 24 – reminded and exhorted
the men of science on their duty as steward of life...

5. Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae pp. 6&7 – condemned all
acts against human life.

6. Humanae Vitae par. 50&53– call us to involve the fight

between the good and evil, culture of death and culture of life.
Human life is sacred b’cos of the creative action of God.
7. CDF par. 57 – life has never been a commodity.
SANCTIONS;
CIC, can. 1398 – excommunication latae sententiae
can. 1314 – by the very commission of the offence
Donum vitae iii - and the subjects to the conditions by Canon Law

ABORTION has a corrosive effect on our attitude toward life. It

touched the lives of millions. No one in our society has
escaped unscathed; everyone is affected by the hardening of
heart which comes when a culture tolerates killing….. It
undermines the very concept of human rights.

Denver’s Archbishop
CONCLUSION/PASTORAL MOTIVES
St. John Bosco says, “let us not expose ourselves to a situation
or circumstances that will surely lead us to commit sin. And let us
not also be caught unaware or unprepared to combat the evils
that our society is facing”.

D & X a.k.a Partial-Birth Abortion is an abortion performed

at the last trimester of pregnancy. The baby is already
viable for life but he is not given a chance to live for his life.
When we judge from the viewpoint of morality, abortion is a
transgression of God’s commandment…one who wilfully kills human
person is guilty of a serious against the fifth commandment: “thou
shall not kill”.

The evil of modernism is truly “a turning away from God”. The

change of view leads to moral degradation. Traditional values are
to be lived and not to be left behind in this modern world. Life is
sacred. It is not a manipulation of science and technology.
Let us maintain our traditional concept of life, i.e. LIFE IS SACRED.
John Powell, SJ wrote: “denial of traditional religious values has
certainly given further momentum to the death-on-demand
movement”. Therefore, we need to protect and promote life against
any form of abortion through the following recommendations;

- Incorporate social teaching of the Church in

the secondary and tertiary levels’ curriculum.

- Launch a campaign on the value of life and dignity of human

being in schools at all levels through symposia, fora, rallies
and open discussions.

- Organize a “citizen life watch” movement.

- Utilize the power and influence of the media.
