A. DEFINITION OF HOPES AND DREAMS

• Hope is something that we want to happen


and we work very hard for it to happen. But we
are not sure whether it will happen or not and
sometimes we can’t do anything about it.
Hopes and dreams signal future intentions
B. MEANING OF HOPE AND DREAMS:

Hope: Hope is a feeling of expectation and


desire for a particular thing to
happen.

Dream: A dream is a cherished ambition,


ideal or aspiration, or an idea
created in fantasy.
C. THE VERB ‘HOPE’ IS TO EXPRESS:
 An event that possibly happened (past)
 A event that will possibly happen (future)

To say what you hope about the past, you use the simple past:

• I hope she found the restaurant.


• I hope he passed his class last semester.

To say what you hope about the present, you use the present:

• I hope he‘s all right.


• I hope he knows where the clinic is.
• I hope he‘s having a good time in Florida.
• I hope he likes Italian food.

To say what you hope about the future, you use the present (or the future,
although it is less common)

• I hope he has a good time in Florida next month. (I hope he’ll have a good time in
Florida next month.)
• I hope she comes to see us when she passes through New York.(I hope she’ll
come to see us when she passes through New York.)
D. SENTENCE STRUCTURE OF HOPE AND DREAMS:
a. Sentence structure to express hope using ”ing verbs”.

Subject -ing verb Complement

I am hoping for some good weather tomorrow

I am hoping for a good grade in English.

b. Sentence structure to express hope using “to” and “that”.

I hope to study in America next year.

I hope to do something beneficial for my country

D. LANGUAGE FEATURES OF HOPE AND DREAMS

1) using "-ing verb":


Subject + -ing verb + Complement
I am hoping for better future next year.

2) using "to" and "that": Expressing Hope Response

DIALOGUE 1

Rita : Where have you been? I have not seen you for two days.
Dewa : Well, I have been sick since Sunday
Rita : What is wrong?
Dewa : I have had a terrible cold all week.
Rita : Oh, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better soon.
Dewa : Thanks, Rita.

DIALOGUE 2

Nata : Yups, my father gets a job there, we have to move to Jakarta.


Rena : Then, you’ll continue your study in there?
Nata : yes, next Monday I’ll have a test to join one of the favorite schools in South
Jakarta.
Rena : Hiks, it means that we won’t study together again.
Nata : Don’t worry Rena (puk-puk), I will visit you when holiday. Let’s hope for
our best, that either you or I can enter our favorite school.
Rena : Aamiin, may we have a success and meet again someday.
