MOLE AND MOLAR

MASS OF ELEMENTS

MOLAR MASS OF ELEMENTS

 Mole is the amount of a substance that

contains as many particles as there are
atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12. Therefore,
the mass of one mole of any element
contains the same number of atoms particles
as there are in exactly 12 grams of C-12.
 The mole is given the SI symbol mol and is
equivalent to Avogadro’s number,
6.022 × 1023
 The number that one mole represents is
expressed as:
1 mol = 6.022 × 1023 particles
 We need to weigh and measure the volume
of substances in order to know the amount of
product that can be produced, if any.

 The concept of mole allows us to determine

the molecular mass and the formula of a
substance if its mass is known.

 Many chemical and physical properties—

volume of a gas, the molarity of a solution,
even the pressure of a sealed tank—are all
related to the concept of mole.
One mole of a certain element implies two things.
1. The atomic mass expressed in grams is
different for each element. This mass is known
as the molar mass of the element.
Molar mass of the element = atomic mass
expressed in g/mol of the element

2. Avogadro’s number of atoms is the same for

all elements.
1 mol C = 12.01 g = 6.022 × 1023 atoms
1 mol O = 16.00 g = 6.022 × 1023 atoms

This means that on mole of any element is equal

to 6.022 × 1023 atoms.
How to Calculate Molar Mass

1. Go to periodic table and determine the atomic

mass average (atomic weight) of the element.
2. Multiply the atomic mass by the number of
atoms in the formula.
3. Add up the results of step three.
 SOLVE

Moles to Mass
1. What is the mass of 5.00 mol of C?
2. What is the mass of 2.50 mol of Ca?

Formula:
no. of moles × g/mol = mass
 SOLVE

Mass to Moles
1. How many moles are present in 25.6 g of C?
2. How many moles are present in 34.2 g of Ca?

Formula:
mass × mol/g = no. moles
 SOLVE

No. of particles to Mass

1. What is the mass of 1.806 × 1024 atoms of C?
2. What is the mass of 3.011 × 1022 atoms of Ca?

Formula:
(no. of particles) × (mol/6.022 × 1023) × (g/mol)
= mass
 SOLVE

Mass to Number of Particles

1. How many individual atoms are present in 24.8 g of C?
2. How many individual atoms are present in 85.7 g of
Ca?

Formula:
(mass) × (mol/g) × (6.022 × 1023/mol)
= no. of atoms
That’s all. Thank you 😊.
