Design Project (KA40403)

Design Brief for New Highway to Connect Jalan

UMS, Jalan Tuaran Bypass and Jalan Tuaran
Presented by Andrew Lim
Prepared by Andrew Lim

Revision - – 22 January 2020 1

Instructions for Group formation
• Maximum 5 members per group.
• Elect a Group Leader (GL) and a Submitting
Person (SP).
• GL will be group representative and also the only
contact person with the lecturer.
• SP is the only person allowed to do all
submissions (hard copy and electronic)
• GL and SP cannot be the same person.
• Each group to have at least one or more laptop
with CAD software at every lecture/tutorial.

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 2

Currently the only dual carriageway,
dual lane main link between Jalan
UMS, Jalan Tuaran Bypass and Jalan
Tuaran is via Jalan Sepanggar. The
intersection where where the roads
meet is served by traffic lights which

Project often cause congestion.

Problem
Statement The other links at Jalan Rampayan,
Jalan Pintas UA1 and Jalan Institut
Sinaran are all single carriageway
roads, incapable of handling any
significant traffic and merge and
involve U-turns without any form of
traffic control.

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 3

• Design a R4 standard dual carriageway
to connect Jalan UMS, Jalan Tuaran
Bypass and Jalan Tuaran.
• New road should be located within red
box on the location plan and must be
Project at least 1km from the existing
intersections numbered 1 through 5.
Criteria • The intersections should be controlled
using grade separated interchange
(flyovers). No traffic lights.
5
Objectives
CO1: Assess problem and interpret project brief
CO2: Identify, collect and synthesize required data
required for design
CO3: Present proposed solutions in the form of written
report to a professional standard
CO4: Apply technical knowledge in conjunction with BIM
modelling to produce a sound and efficient
structural engineering solution
CO5: Deliver oral presentations to a professional
standard
CO6: Plan and organize work to achieve project
objective as a group

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 6

CO1
Engage external stakeholders (end users, local
communities, specialist consultants) to identify needs
and expectations.

Interpret project brief, identify project constraints and

establish aim of the project, taking into consideration
economic, societal and environmental aspects

Prepare three or more preliminary solution alternatives

to achieve the aim of the project

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 7

CO 2
Conduct desktop study of terrain type with consideration
to land use, utilities, impact to communities and
environment.

Liaise with statutory authorities to identify restraints

conditions

Carry out site reconnaissance, topographical,

geotechnical and traffic surveys as required.

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 8

CO 3

Carry out critical analysis of each of the solution alternatives

in CO1 and use multi-criteria analysis to select one solution
for detailed design

Present a technical report to summarize engineering design,

investigation findings, design proposals and give
recommendations with justification/supporting calculations

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 9

CO 4
For selected solution from CO3, select and use design
and modelling tool to produce final set drawings and
comment on shortcomings of method

Prepare technical drawings conforming to a high industry

standard containing sufficient information to produce a
BQ for tender

Ensure design is fully coordinated

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 10

CO 5

Give public consultation style presentation to

summarize findings and receive feedback

Be sure to include technical details, critical analysis

and comparison of options, costs and environmental
implications

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 11

CO 6

Identify all tasks required to achieve objectives in

CO3, with milestones and critical path analysis

Identify and allocate all resources available to

effect a streamlined and coordinated design

Adhere to project timeline set by the course

coordinator and as identified on team gantt chart

Revision 0 - 01 February 2016 12
