Marks and Attributes of the Church
Learning Target:
• I can identify the four marks and attributes of the Church (ONE, HOLY,
CATHOLIC, APOSTOLIC)
• I can distinguish the meaning of the marks and attributes of the Church in relation
to others Faith and Traditions
• The Marks of the Church

The Church is One

• Her source, founder and soul is one, the Blessed Trinity.
• There is unity of creed, cult and code.
• There is hierarchical unity through apostolic succession.
• The Church is a unity in diversity. The diversity in the Church is found in the:
variety of gifts and gifted personalities
multiplicity of peoples and cultures gathered together
particular Churches with their own traditions
Wounds to Unity in the Church:

• Sin and its consequences constantly threaten the gift of unity in the Church. Other serious
threats include heresy, apostasy and schism.

• Heresy is the obstinate denial or doubt of any truths which must be believed with divine
and catholic faith by a baptized Christian.

• Apostasy refers to the total repudiation of the Christian faith by a baptized Christian.

• Schism is a withdrawal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff or from communion with the
members of the Church subject to him
The Church is Holy
• Her source of holiness is Jesus Christ.
• The Holy Spirit graces her with the fullness of the means of holiness — preaching of the
Word of God, liturgy and sacraments especially the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation,
moral virtues and charismatic gifts, teachings of faith and morals and works of charity. But
above all, charity is the center of holiness in the Church (Jn 13:34-35).
• All without exception are called to holiness, the perfection of charity in different paths or
ways. It’s an invitation to grow in God’s grace and a paschal pilgrimage. The holiness of the
Church is visible and heroic in the innumerable canonized and uncanonized men and
women throughout the ages who lived exemplary lives. Saints Augustine, Nicholas of
Tolentino, Ezekiel Moreno, Sebastian, Lorenzo Ruiz and Blessed Pedro Calungsod are
some of the few who seriously responded to this call to holiness.
• Since the Church is made up, too, of weak and imperfect individuals, she is at the same
time in need of constant purification, ceaselessly practicing penitence and self-renewal (cf.
LG 8).
The Church is Catholic
• The word catholic means universal, complete, all-embracing, and ecumenical. The
Church is catholic because Christ is present in her. It has been attributed first by
St. Ignatius of Antioch (50-117 A.D.). He was the third Bishop of Antioch.
Antioch was the seat of St. Peter’s ministry and the city where Christ’s disciples
were called for the first time Christians. He was condemned to death by Trajan
and was taken to Rome where he was led to the amphitheater and was devoured
by fierce lions. As stated in his letter to Smyrna, he said “Where the bishop is, there
is the Christian community, just as where Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.”
The Church is Apostolic
• She is permanently grounded on the foundations of apostles with Christ as the
cornerstone (Eph 2:20).
• She guards and transmits the good deposit of faith, apostolic teachings and witness (cf.
Mt. 28:19-20; 2 Tim 1:13-14), through the power of the Holy Spirit.
• She continues to be guided, instructed, and sanctified by the apostles through
their apostolic succession. Her unity in faith and communion are grounded in the
successors of the apostles and especially of Peter, the chosen Rock upon which
Christ built His Church

among the different religious beliefs?

• Why is it important to honor and respect each

Religious Pluralism
• JESUS CHRIST
UNIVERSAL, COMPLETE, ALL EMBRACING, ECUMINCAL
• Religious pluralism is an attitude or
policy regarding the diversity
of religious belief systems co-existing in
society
• Religious pluralism is a set of religious world views that
hold that one’s religion is not the sole and exclusive source
of truth, and thus recognizes that some level of truth and
value exists in other religions.

• As such religious pluralism goes beyond religious tolerance,

which is the condition of peaceful existence between
adherent of different religions or religious denominations.

Ecumenism is an effort initiated by the Roman Catholic Church that promotes and
restores the unity of Christians churches through prayer, dialogue and other initiatives
to eliminate barriers and move toward the unity Christ willed for the Church (Eph 4:4-
5; Jn 17:21; UR 1-4).
• Why is ecumenism important? It is important because the quest of Christian unity is a
missionary responsibility of the Church. The Church is a sacrament of Christ and
of the Triune God who is present in the Church. Our baptism calls us to seek, work
and promote the unity Christ desired for His Church.
• Ecumenism requires theological collaboration, dialogue, joint study and cooperation
in social action; reform and renewal; and a change of heart and holiness.
RESPECT
• RESPECT
An incident happened in a Norwegian Mosque recently that took the media by storm!
The future King of Norway, Crown Prince Haakon, was visting the Baerem Mosque which had the
failed attempted mass shooting. He proceeded to shake hands with the Masjid attendees, then
extended his hands to shake it with one of our sisters. She politely refused, and instead put her hands
on her heart to show an alternative form of respect. The Crown Prince then learned the gesture and
continued to greet the other sisters in the same way, by putting his hand on his heart!
Of course, the right-wing media then took this small cultural misunderstanding and turned it into an
all-out-attack on Muslims and immigration, considering that we have elections in just 2 weeks!
Is this really considered an act of disrespect?
I personally share a story, where I had a Japanese friend who took me to dinner to discuss travel plans.
Once we went together to the airport, I offered to hug him as this is what we do in our culture when
you won't see someone for a long time. What did he do?
The Japanese man politely explained to me that in his culture, it is frowned upon for even two
men to touch each other (not a man and a woman, but two men!). So instead, he bowed down
to me out of respect. I explained to him that in our religion, we are ordered not to bow down
to anyone other than our Creator, so instead, I nodded to him my head while putting my hand
on my heart, the same gesture the sister and the King did!
Did anyone feel disrespected? No! Two mature people will always understand that humans are
different, and have different customs depending on their upbringing and beliefs, and even
people from the same belief may have a different understanding too. It is only immature
people, or trouble-makers, or people with an agenda, who try to make a big fuzz out of a small
human interaction such as a greeting!
The Queen of England never shakes hands with anyone, not even while she is travelling to
other countries, and others are informed about this in advance, and it doesn't cause any
problems as long as mutual respect is communicated. Our sisters are also Queens for their
families and communities, and so we all treat them as such!
• On the positive side, this incident will open a dialogue about cultural/religious
understanding that will promote respect from all sides towards each other. We
thank the future King of Norway for taking his time to visit the Mosque and
showing respect to our community and our sisters, and we pray that other Western
heads of state learn from his exceptional mannerism and respect for the minorities
in his country!

1. “Knowing Jesus is a life-long task. It is a continuing process because only in
Jesus Christ do we come to know our own true selves, and the deepest
meaning and destiny of our lives.” (CFC 470)

2. “Knowing Jesus is a living, changing, growing and a deepening experience.

It means that to know Jesus means entering into a personal relationship with
him.“ (CFC 471)

3. “The Jesus that we come to know is both the historical earthly Jesus and the
Risen Christ of faith.” (CFC 472) Thus, St. Paul in his letter to the Romans
said, “He who was descended from David according to the flesh was made Son
of God in power according to the spirit of holiness, by his resurrection from
the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Rom 1:3-4)
4. “To know Jesus means being committed to become his true follower. There
is no authentic knowing Jesus Christ outside of personal commitment to his
teaching and way of life. Knowing Jesus must make a difference in our lives. It
must be accompanied with a loving service of others in living faith.” (CFC 473)

5. “We come to know who Jesus is from what he did, his saving work. So, we
turn to the Gospels, which faithfully hand on what Jesus, the Son of God, while
he lived among us, really did and taught for our eternal salvation.”(CFC 474)
