Modifier

 The word modifier actually comes from the word


modify.
 Modify means to “change something”.
 Ex. The easiest way to modify how you look is to
change your hairstyle or get a haircut.
 Ex. Every year car companies try to make some small
modifications in their car models.
Modifier, cont.

 A modifier is a word or group of words, or phrase,


that makes the meaning of other words or groups of
words more exact.
 MODIFIER + WORD= A more interesting
description.
 Ugly + monster= ugly monster
 Red + blouse= red blouse
 Young + children= young children
Modifier, cont.

 Modifier + word
 The word is usually a noun and just gives a general
description.
 Add one, two, three, or more modifiers and that
word changes into something very specific.
 Modifiers can be adjectives, or adverbs
Practice

 Modify each noun with a  Baby


word that makes the
noun more exact.  Breakfast
 Remember words used to
modify nouns are called
adjectives.
 Sun
 Lamp
 Shoes
 car

 Modifiers can modify a verb.


 Adverbs are used to modify verbs.
 Little Man wailed indignantly.
 Mr. Andersen studied hard.
