INTRODUCTION
• Wireless power transfer (WPT) is the transmission of
electrical power without wires and is based on
technologies using time-varying electric, magnetic, or
electromagnetic fields.
• wireless power system consists of a "transmitter"
device connected to a source of power such as a mains
power line, which converts the power to a time-varying
electromagnetic field.
• Wireless power uses the same fields and waves as
wireless communication devices like radio.
WHAT IS WIRELESS ELECTRICITY
• Transmission of electrical
energy from power source
to an electrical load without
using wires.
• Different from cellular
transmission of signals
HISTOTY
• Sir NIKOLA TESLA was the first one to propose and research the
idea of wireless transmission in 1899, since than many scholars and
scientists have been working to make his dream a reality.
• Tesla's Magnifying Transmitter, an early type of Tesla Coil that
measured 16 meters in diameter, was able to transmit tens of
thousands of watts without wires.
• 1961: William C. Brown publishes an article exploring possibilities of
microwave power transmission.
• 2009: Sony shows a wireless electrodynamics-induction powered TV
set, 60 W over 50 cm.
WIRELESS POWER IN ELECTRONIC GOODS
• Now-a-days there is a rapid increase
of electronic goods like cell phones
,laptops ,I-pods etc.
• These electronic devices rely on the
chemical storage of energy by the
battery which need to be recharged
frequently.
• As these are becoming daily needs to
the present generation wireless energy
transfer is useful i.e., witricity would
be useful for many applications as
these things need mid range energy.
Examples of Wireless Power Applications

• There are countless applications for wireless power transfer. Here are
just a few examples of what companies are currently trying to achieve:

 Cofee shops: phone charging stations at coffee tables

 Qi: cordless kitchen appliances for the home
 Bosch: cordless power drills for construction sites
 Delphi: in-cabin phone charging and infotainment systems for vehicles
 IKEA: integrated furniture and lighting for entirely wireless homes
Techniques of Wireless power transmisson
Near-field techniques Far-field techniques

• Inductive Coupling • Microwave Power Transmission (MPT)

• Resonant Inductive Coupling • LASER power transmission
• Air Ionization
• Atmospheric conduction method of tesla
Near-field techniques
• At large relative distance, the near-field components of electric and
magnetic fields are approximately quasi-static oscillating dipole fields.
These fields decrease with the cube of distance.
• Since power is proportional to the square of the field strength, the
power transferred decreases decade. In other words, if far apart,
doubling the distance between the two antennas causes the power
received to decrease by a factor.
• As a result, inductive and capacitive coupling can only be used for
short-range power transfer, within a few times the diameter of the
antenna device Dant.
Inductive coupling
• Primary and secondary
coils are not connected
with wires.
• Energy transfer is due
to Mutual Induction
• Wireless Charging
Pad(WCP) ,Electric
Brushes are some
examples.
Resonance Inductive Coupling(RIC)
The capacitor and inductor forms the
resonator. Charge oscillates between
inductor (as magnetic field) and
capacitor (as electric field.)
• This type of oscillation is called
resonance if the reactance's
of the inductor and capacitor
are equal.
• A drawback of resonant coupling
theory is that at close ranges when the
two resonant circuits are tightly
coupled.
Air Ionization
• Toughest technique under near-field
energy transfer techniques
• Air ionizes only when there is a high field
• Needed field is 2.11MV/m
• Natural example: Lightening
• Not feasible for practical implementatio
Advantages & Disadvantages of near-
field techniques
Advantages:
• No wire,
• No e-waste
• Need for battery eliminated
• Efficient & Harmless
Disadvantages:
• Distance constraint
• Field should be under safety level
• High initial cost
• Tuning is difficult in RIC
Microwave Power Transfer(MPT)
• Transfers high power from one place to another. Two places
being in line of sight usually
• Steps:
 Electrical energy to microwave
 Capturing microwaves using rectenna
 Microwave energy to electrical energy
• AC is converted to DC first
• DC is converted to microwaves using magnetron
Advantages & Disadvantages of Far
Field Technology
Advantages DISADVANTAGES
• Efficient , Easy • Radiate
• Need for grid eliminated • When LASERs are used,
 conversion is inefficient
• Low maintenance cost
 Absorption loss is high
• More effective when the  When microwaves are used
transmitting and receiving • interference may arise
points are along a line-of-sight
• Can reach the places which are
remote
APPLICATIONS
Near-field energy transfer
• Electric automobile charging
• Static and moving
• Consumer electronics
• Industrial purposes
• Harsh environment

 Far-field energy transfer

• Solar Power Satellites
• Energy to remote areas
• Can broadcast energy globally (in future)
• Nikola Tesla - performed the first
experiments on wireless electricity.
• He had put a great effort in
popularizing the idea.
Tesla Coil
• The transmission distance was increased by using a receiving
LC circuit ,tuned to resonance with the transmitter's LC
circuit.
• Using voltages of the order of 20 megavolts generated by an
enormous coil,
He was able to light three incandescent lamps by resonant
inductive coupling
Distance -100 feet (30 m).
Wardenclyffe Tower
• Tesla began construction of a large
high-voltage coil facility, the Warden
clyffe Tower
• A prototype transmitter for a "World
Wireless System"
• To transmit power worldwide.
• The facility was never completed, due
to lack of funding
