 Oil and water
saturation
APPLIC ATION OF SIDEWALL CORING

1. Determine whether changes in resistivity is due to

reduction of porosity or presence of hydrocarbon.
2. Determine grain size, mineralogy, and biostratigraphy
of complex reservoir.
3. Taking sample in specific depth.
4. Use to calibrate electrical log data.
5. Use to determine gas-oil and water-oil contact.
Pros and Cons of Sidewall Coring
Pros Cons
1. Great depth control. 1. Since the data are not
2. Can obtain smaller bits of continuous, interpretation

3. Cost effective.
4. Less time-consuming.
SIDEWALL CORING TOOL
Rotary Sidewall Coring

The rotary sidewall corer uses a diamond-tipped drill to cut

individual plugs from the sidewall.

The samples are broken off and pulled from the sidewall by the
core drill.

The drill is then retracted into the body of the tool where the
samples are deposited.

The tool is moved to a new sample location after depositing

each sample.
Advantages Disadvantages
Produces samples suitable for High cost per sample and
quantitative core analysis. longer time per recovered core.
Preserve the rock pore Does not work well in
structure. unconsolidated formation due
to low recovery
Multiple samples – up to 50 Coring difficult in large whole
core samples. (washout)
Percussion sidewall coring
• Shoot hollow, retrievable, cylindrical bullets 1
inch wide by 1.75 inch long into the borehole
wall.
• The tool (gun) can be combined in multiples of
approximately 30 bullets with 120 shots a
general maximum.
• The gun is lowered to the desired depth, then
individual bullets are electrically fired from the
surface. The bullets remain connected to the
gun by wires, the movement of the gun pulls
the bullets from the borehole wall.
• Different bullet (core barrel) designs are
available for unconsolidated, soft and medium
to hard formation.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages Disadvantages

The process is fast The bullet usually alters the formation by

shattering harder rock or compressing softer
sediment.
Low cost Reducing the quantitative value of the sidewall
core analysis data.

Precise ability to sample zones of interest after This tools recovery tends to be low in very hard
open hole logs have been run. or fractured rock.
METHOD OF SIDEWALL CORING

1) Percussion
2) Mechanical Drilling @ Rotary Drilling
A) Precussion Sidewall Coring:
The tool is positioned at the desired zone.

Core bullets are fired from the core gun.

The bullets are forcefully ejected into the borehole wall.

Then gun is retrieved to the surface with core bullets filled with
core samples.
CORE SAMPLE:

DIAMETER: 2.5cm
LONG: 4.4cm
B) MECHANICAL DRILLING @ ROTARY CORING

The rotary sidewall corer uses a diamond-tipped drill

The samples are broken off and pulled by the core drill

The drill is retracted into the body of the tool

The tool is moved to a new sample location after depositing

each sample
CORE SAMPLE:

DIAMETER: 2.3cm
LONG: 5.0cm
CONCLUSION

• The introduction and first implementation of the sidewall

coring technology for the unconventional reservoirs is great
as we are going forward so advanced analysis would be
needed.
