• According to the study done by the National Youth Commission (NYC),two(2) out of five(5) Filipino
teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old smoke cigarettes . Furthermore, in a study conducted by an anti-
tobacco group in the year 2011, ten Filipinos die every hour because of tobacco-related diseases.
• Health experts explained that the continuous increase in cigarette use and alcohol consumption by
Filipino teenagers is due to its very cheap price. Many pro-health groups are now asking the
government to increase taxes of cigarette and alcohol companies. The increase in taxes will
likewise increase cigarette and alcohol prices in the country.
Effects of Smoking on the Body
Body Odor – effect of cigarette smoke to your body scent.
Heart Diseases- involves the cardiovascular system.
Emphysema- damaged air sacs in the lungs.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)- a lung disease
Cancer- a group of disease which makes body cells grow uncontrollably.
High Blood Pressure- too much exertion of blood against the arteries
causing damaged.
Bad Breath- foul smell exhaled from the mouth.
Bronchitis- inflammation of the airways from the trachea into the lungs.
Asthma- a chronic disease which affects the airways.
Pneumonia- infection of the lungs.
Part II: What to Process
• Tobacco- is a tall leafy plant, originally grown
in South and Central America ,
but now cultivated throughout the world.
• Cigarette- a thin cylinder of finely-cut tobacco rolled in paper for smoking.
• Refers to the leaves of the plant which are dried and prepared for smoking and
chewing.
• Nicotiana tabacum- or sometimes called common tobacco is preferred for
producing present day cigarettes.
• Tobacco use has been recorded as early as 600-900 CE as carved drawings on
stones, were discovered in Mexico. American Indians smoked it for special
religious occasions and medical purpose only. They never smoke cigar every
day.
• According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco smoking and
chewing is the second leading cause of death around the world.
• It is responsible for the death of 1 to 10 adults
worldwide approximately reaching 5 million
deaths in a year.
• It is estimated that the death toll will rise to 10
million each year by the year 2020.
• Each time a person puffs a cigarette or chew tobacco, more than 4000
chemicals come into his/her contact.
• In studies conducted, 43 of these chemicals are known carcinogen.
• Carcinogens are substances which cause cancer.
• Nicotine the addictive drug found in tobacco products like cigarettes are
poisonous.
• A stimulant drug increase the central nervous system (CNS) activity. The CNS
controls all body organs like the heart, lung, brain, and process like heart rate,
blood pressure rate etc.
• Every time a cigarette is lighted, smoke is emitted. There are three smokes
produced by cigarette smoking name:

from any point of the perimeter of a school, public playground, or other facility
frequented particularly by minors
