What is midwife?

Working with women and families through pregnancy, labour and after birth, a midwife’s
job is unlike most healthcare professions. If you feel strongly about giving great care and
advocating for women and mothers this could be an ideal job for you.
Unlike nursing, you’ll typically care for people who are well rather than sick and will be
part of some of the most important moments of your patients’ lives.
You’ll learn how to manage and care for a normal pregnancy, labour and birth – and what
to do or who to turn to when things deviate from the norm.
This flexible role offers opportunities to specialise or stay general, pursue research
interests or move into teaching – without losing the option to return to clinical practice. You
can work in a variety of settings – which are explained in detail below. Midwives are in demand
but training courses are oversubscribed so you’re likely to need good academic qualifications
and strong evidence of your commitment to caring for others.
You may already have everything that’s required from previous work and study but with
the help of our experts, we’ll show how you can best prepare yourself for the role of a midwife
and boost your chances of getting the right training at the same time.
A midwife looks after the health of mother and baby during,
before and after pregnancy. Midwives are an essential part of the
birthing process, as a woman needs all the support she can get at
what is possibly the most important and challenging moment in
an entire family’s life. Midwives provide the practical, medical
and human knowledge to deliver babies safely into the world.
They also carry out check-ups on the mother and baby’s health
before and after pregnancy. Midwifery can be split into 3 areas
which are taken care of in 3 separate clinics:
1.Antenatal: care of the unborn child still in the womb.
2.Delivery: care of mother and baby during the actual birthing
process.
Postnatal: care after the baby has been born, in the early weeks
of life.
