Warehouse
A warehouse stores the goods of others for
compensation and has the rights and duties of a bailee
in an ordinary mutual benefit bailment.
• A warehouser issues a warehouse receipt to the
depositor of the goods.
This receipt is a document of title that ordinarily entitles the
person in possession of the receipt to receive the goods.
Function of Warehouse
• Receive the produce/material
• Store them properly (Stacking, Space between two
stack, height of stack, use of plate in the ground)
• Protect the goods from damage, pilferage and
deterioration in quality
Warehouse Receipt
• A document to state the ownership of the goods
• Warrant issued by warehouse to a person who
deposits his goods
• Document of title of goods as per the Sale of
Goods Act, 1930
TYPES OF WAREHOUSE RECEIPTS
• A nonnegotiable warehouse receipt states that the
goods received will be delivered to a specified person.

• A negotiable warehouse receipt states that the goods


will be delivered “to the bearer” or “to the order of”
a named person.
ELEMENTS OF
WAREHOUSE RECEIPT
• Warehouse Receipt Serial Number
• Name of warehouse and it’s location license number
• Date of issue of receipt and duration of storage
• Name of commodity, it’s quantity, quality and grading and
standardization
• Private mark of depositor on goods
• Rate of storage and other charges
• Approximate value of goods stored
• Insurance details
• Whether warehouse receipt is negotiable or non negotiable

Types of Carriers
• Common Carriers
• Furnish transportation of goods for a price; available to the
general public.
• Contract Carriers
• Furnish transportation of goods according to a specific contract with a specific
party.
• Private Carriers
• Transport goods owned by the carrier’s owners.
