E- Commerce.

eCommerce, in a nutshell it is the ability to conduct

business electronically using computer networks such
as the Internet or online social networks . Electronic
commerce draws on technologies such as mobile
commerce , electronic funds transfer, supply chain
management, Internet marketing, online transaction
processing, inventory management systems, and
automated data collection systems. Modern electronic
commerce typically uses the World Wide Web for at
least one part of the transaction's life cycle although it
may also use other technologies such as e-mail.
E-commerce businesses may employ some or all of
the following:

• Online shopping web sites for retail sales direct to consumers

• Providing or participating in online marketplaces, which
process third-party business-to-consumer or consumer-to-
consumer sales
• Business-to-business buying and selling
• Gathering and using demographic data through web contacts
and social media
• Business-to-business electronic data interchange
• Marketing to prospective and established customers by e-
mail or fax (for example, with newsletters)
A great example of a E-commerce giant in India is
ZOMATO. It’s something we all are very familiar with
and has indeed made our lives very easy. Founded in
2008 by MR. Deependra Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah
the organization is headquartered in Gurugram,
Haryana. It’s incorporation much to my surprise was a
very general and basic idea so I guess we all can be a
founder of an upcoming major organization that
zomato is today. To give you the insight of what
zomato is all about I would like to call upon Mukul.
E-commerce & Design.

Design of a web project is the next most important

and popular development phase. The focus is on the
fact that how will the application meet it’s objectives.
It is all about communications. As the saying goes
First impression is the last impression therefore it
makes it necessary for the application to be
interactive and eye catching in a way that it
distinguishes itself from that of it’s competitors.
As for Zomato, My friend Tushar will enlighten you
with the information.

There is a hype in the market about a question regarding “The entry of Zomato in online food-ordering
business. The commission charged is half as compared to other existing players. Is it because of the
fact that for Zomato it is an additional revenue stream?”
According to the CEO, Depender Goyal, For us, online ordering is a key business point and the lower
commission rate is not a reflection of how we are prioritising the business. In fact, our approach to the
commission structure is unique where we are placing Zomato consumers first and giving incentives to
our partner restaurants to service them better. We charge a lower commission from our partner
restaurants if the delivery experience for the consumer is amazing, as measured by the new system of
'delivery rating'. We believe that happy consumers will drive more volumes and consequently more
business.

Marketing.
• E-commerce marketing is the practice of guiding online

can include practices like:
 Affiliation with better-known websites through referral
marketing or banner advertising
 Retention of current customers through email marketing.

After providing you with the general idea of interrelations

amongst e-commerce and marketing Ishaan will throw some light
on the Marketing strategies adopted by zomato.
Zomato Marketing Strategy:-
• Always be there for your customer: Our users encourage us,
criticize us, suggest ways for us to improve our products, ask for
our help to find the best places to eat around them and we’ve
always made it a point to listen and react to what they have to
say as quickly as possible. This stikes a chord with them. We
have been able to this consistently by our keeping social media
in-house.
• Stick to your domain: Our focus has always been around food
& nightlife and we extend that to social media as well. Our posts
are related to food & nightlife, our product launches, and updates
on Zomato.
• Content is king: We do not believe in spamming the timeline,
which is why you will see that we limit our updates to when
So has this strategy helped?
We have around 90 million visits monthly. Zomato has been
ranked as second largest startup in India. We started with
only Bain and company back in 2008 and now we are
connected with information for over 1 million restaurants
(and counting) globally.
Success factors:-
• First mover advantage
• Strong content platform
• Efficient employees
• Good rating mechanism and social platform
• Funding from experienced source
Changes in Marketing Strategy:-
• Featured and user friendly website
• Global mobile app
Focusing on digital marketing channels for potential customers

• Integrating other tools in their marketing strategy has given us wonderful
hike in our business.
• Sales promotion: Coupons and price-offs
• Direct Marketing: Phone call and direct mail
• Online payment mechanism
Tackling our failures:-
On 4 June 2015, an Indian security researcher
hacked our website, gained access to
information about 62.5 million users. Using the
vulnerability he was able to access personal
data of users such as phone number, email
address, and Instagram private photos using
their Instagram access token. We fixed the
issue within 48 hours of it becoming apparent.
E-commerce & Finance.

Coming to one of the most important

factor that forms the basis of everything
i.e. Finances and Earnings.
Naman will explain the rest in context to
zomato.
How does Zomato earn money?
Restaurant advertising accounts for 100% of our regular revenue. We have other one time
revenue streams: NYE ticketing and print guide sales. We have shut our events section as
well as consulting services.
4 revenue streams:
1) Restaurant advertising: this is when we place banner ads for restaurants on the
website. This accounts for ~75% of Zomato's revenue.
2) Event advertising: this is when specific events promote an event on Zomato - this
revenue primarily comes from restaurant based advertisers. Typically, tickets for these
events are also sold on Zomato. This accounts for ~5% of our revenue
3) Event ticket sales: commissions on ticket sales through Zomato; primarily for
restaurant venues; accounts for ~15% of our revenue.
4) Consulting services: Restaurant chains ask us for advice on where to open their next
outlet/branch. We dig through terabytes of data to tell them where the demand lies and
what's the competition like.
Zomato has been showing a
growing trend in revenues and
grew by 83 percent to Rs
7,883.57 lakh in FY 2014-15 from
