Usage – Pronoun Reference

✘ Pronouns are words that stand in for a noun in a sentence. Whenever pronouns are
used, it should be unmistakably clear which noun the pronoun is standing in for. A
faulty pronoun reference will result in a muddled sentence and a confused reader.

✘ Pronouns stand in for nouns. That’s why they’re called pro – nouns. When used
properly, pronoun referents are clear. This noun called the pronoun’s antecedent.
✘ Antecedents with the pronoun also have to adjust in terms of how many person
shapes are being used, whether it is First Person, Second Person, or Third
Person. The following is a pronoun list based on the first, second or third person
form.
✘ First Person: I, We (Subjective) Me, Us (Objective) My / Mine, Our / Ours
(Possessive)
✘ Second Person: You (Subjective), You (Objective), Your / Yours (Possessive)
✘ Third Person: She, He, It, They (Subjective) Her, Him, It, Them (Objective) Her
/ Hers, His, Its, Their, Theirs (Possessive)
Example :
1. Niken and Anggun have decided to do over their task.
2. They took off their shoes there.
3. Hanif and Nauval spend their money to buy a lot of
books yesterday.
4. Galih is my brother and he loves me so much.
Major Pronoun Reference Errors
1. Too Many Antecedents
A pronoun have only one antecedent.
Example :When Nurul lost drama script, she was upset.
2. Hidden Antecedents
Faulty pronoun reference errors also occur when the pronoun’s
antecedent functions as an adjective rather than a noun.
Example : There was a hungry wolf in that jungle, it ate lots of
deers.
3. No Antecedent At All
Use a pronoun without giving the pronoun any antecedent at
all.
Example : When Horta enters the exam, they need to check the
exam card.
