1
INTRODUCTION
• Short cantilever projecting from columns to
support beams
• Design in governed by shear

elevation of corbel 2
• Loads Vu ,Nus
• Designed mainly to resist Vu , Mu and Nus
Vu – ultimate shear force
Mu – ultimate moment
Nus – horizontal tensile force
• Applications
- precast construction
- architectural purpose

3
STRUT AND TIE MODEL

Strut and tie models for internal forces

4

2. hoop bars , Ah
3. framing bars

5
FAILURE

Direct shear Flexural tension

•A series of short and •Caused by excessive yielding
steep diagonal cracks of rebars, bottom
interconnect and leads concrete crush – can
to shear failure. become excessively
widecracks
6
Horizontal tension Diagonal splitting
•Shrinkage of supported
•Diagonal splitting develops
beam
along diagonal compression
strut after formation of
flexural cracks.

7
Crushing due to bearing Anchorage splitting
•Due to too small or •Load applied too near
flexible bearing plate free end of cantilever and
flexural reinforcement
poorly anchored

method) or strut and tie model

Vn = nominal shear strength

Vu = ultimate factored shear force
φ = strength reduction factor (φ = 0.75)

Tension reinforcement
φAn fy ≥ Nuc
ACI Code
An = area of tension reinforcement 11.8.3.4
fy = yield strength of the tension reinforcement
Flexural reinforcement
Mu = Vu(av)+ Nuc (h − d)
ACI Code
Mu = ultimate flexure moment 11.8.3.3

av = distance of Vu from face of column

h = height of corbel , d = effective depth of corbel
